3 Things You Need to Know to Create a Tight Feedback Loop - 90% of Managers Fail at This

The most important thing when it comes to managing a team – whether physically present in an office or virtually spread across the globe – is the ability to create a tight feedback loop. Getting this right can have a meaningful impact on an employee's performance and your business's overall success.

So, what's the secret to fostering conversation and building a feedback culture? Here are three points to consider:

1. Timeliness Matters: Timely feedback is crucial in any managerial relationship. If an issue arises, tackle it immediately rather than postponing it to a later date or looming performance review. Avoiding delay is vital; it allows the feedback to remain relevant, meaningful and, potentially, more readily accepted and acted upon.

2. Clarity is Key: It's also essential to ensure that your feedback is clear and concise. Aim to communicate the main points in a short span of about five minutes. Here's a quick guide to shaping the conversation:

???- This is what happened...'

???- This is what I prefer would've happened...'

???- This is why I prefer it to happen this way...'

By following this structure, you provide a complete picture of the situation, making it simple for your staff members to understand your perspective and implement your suggestions.

3. Emotional Intelligence Reigns: Personal emotions can heavily influence a feedback session. Strong emotion should not influence your feedback to maintain respect and acceptance. If your feedback veers towards the petty or illogical, it will not only be poorly received, but it may also damage your relationship with your employee.

It's important to remember that regular feedback is a tool to anticipate and prevent recurring issues. Without this communication, managers risk dealing with the frustration of repeating problems. Moreover, it's essential for staff members to know where they stand, feel heard and understand how they can improve.?

While these points may sound straightforward, 90% of managers fail to give feedback effectively. For those striving for a harmonious working relationship and a thriving business, remember: timely, clear and emotionally intelligent feedback is the way forward. Cultivating a productive feedback culture will inevitably build a more successful business.

I absolutely agree with what you've written , Amy Wallin; without CLEAR feedback, it's hard to put what is said into perspective and improve if we don't exactly know what it is. Sometimes, the person in charge of giving feedback is deliberately vague to not hurt someone's feelings, but it is not in the receiver's best interests! It can lead to disillusionment and uncertainty and, ultimately, job loss.
