You've got a Job Interview coming up around the corner, you've been doing the preparations, but here are 3 things I want you to remember which can help you stand out which oftentimes, people tend to overlook:
- The interview is about the intersection between you and them: your relevant skills, experiences, and capabilities. Many people will think that the Job Interview is about talking about each and every impressive accomplishment you have under your belt and then go on and on about those accomplishments. While your accomplishments are certainly important - the truth is, the Hiring Team does not want to know about all of them. They do however want to know about your most relevant accomplishments. It doesn't matter how proud you are about an accomplishment if its not relevant to the Hiring Team! So understand that the Interview is about the intersection between you and them: your most *relevant* skills, experiences, knowledge, and accomplishments. Sometimes you'll be able to determine what those are from the job description or your point of contact for the interview process - and other times, you'll have to figure it out during the Interview itself.
- They want to know YOUR response, not some witty response you memorized from the Internet. Its tempting to read those articles which provide word-for-word scripts on how to respond to certain questions and then decide that you have to memorize those responses for your Interviews. Not a good idea. People - yourself included - can usually tell when someone is reciting some memorized script versus actually speaking about themselves and what they have to offer. Ever received a call from a telemarketer who is obviously reading off some script in front of them? We can't see them but yet we can tell with 99.9% confidence that they must be reading from a script or saying something which doesn't seem to match their personality. Its the same thing at your interviews - seasoned Hiring Teams, HR people, and Recruiters can easily see that you are just regurgitating something you found on the Internet. But what they really want is to know YOUR response. They want to know about YOUR experiences, thoughts, perspective, etc. This is why understanding the mechanics of something is so much more important so you can implement it based on YOU and YOUR experiences. Now if you can't explain your own thoughts, perspective, and experiences as someone in your field - then there's a problem, and it has nothing to do with memorizing the right response; the problem is your lack of knowledge as someone supposedly working in your field.
- Different stakeholders have different views, agendas, and perspectives. Different stakeholders may require different responses: how you respond to a question posed by someone at the Team Lead level might be much more different than the same (or similar) question posed by someone at the C-Level or a different department of the company. A one-size-fits-all response might not always be beneficial. When you meet different people at an Organization - from HR/Talent Acquisition all the way to C-level Executives - you have to understand these are people with different areas of responsibility, different agendas, different perspectives, and different stakes in the Hiring decision. You have to keep their perspective and responsibilities in mind when responding to the questions they ask. How will having you on the team impact their job or area of responsibility positively? Keep this in mind in your interactions with stakeholders you'll meet.
