3 Things Parkland Students and we all can do that can make a difference
Not much more can be said, written, or taped about the increased attention regarding guns and death. Parkland Students and others got on the front page, leading lines and on our screens with their protest(s) and interviews.
My question is: Are we serious about making a real difference and in decreasing the number of people who die as a result of being shot? If so, here are 3 things Parkland Students and the rest of us can do that will bring results.
- Since most of the deaths by gun shot comes from suicide (about two-thirds or more), we can all get better at knowing our friends and family. The professionals tell us that usually there are signs that we can observe that will tip us off that someone is in trouble within the darkness of their minds. Learn what those signs are and take the time to spend time with the people you love. You may save their life and others by reaching out to them. (Text CONNECT TO 741741 from anywhere in the USA, anytime, about any type of crisis) or call National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. Better yet, put both of these in your phone so you will always have it handy.
- The next leading cause of death by gun shot is one on one murder. Stay away from gangs and drugs. There are some places in our American cities that become almost war zones in pending danger. On this battle field, drugs and gangs leave behind a mass grave of innocent by- standers and someone's precious Son or Daughter. If you know someone who is turning to drugs or gangs, get proactive----NOW. (National Drug Helpline: 1-888-633-3239.
- Sadly that 17 wonderful and brave persons lost their lives in the Parkland shooting; we should never forget this and show support to the students that lived through this tragedy. Last year 1700 women were killed in Domestic Violence. The most dangerous place for many of these women were their own homes. Learn to read the signs of domestic violence. When you know it does exist, do not bury your head in the sand. Reach out to professionals who will help you and or your friends who are facing a possible violent outcome. This cannot be taken lightly. We can no longer say it is none of our business. Many of those 1700 lives could be saved, if someone had gotten involved and helped get a safety plan in action through professional help. (Call the Domestic Abuse Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).
Creating awareness alone, will not get the job done. Let's all do something we can all agree about that can make a difference.
