3 Things I’ve learned about developing a Growth Mindset
Fernando Cuevas
Human Resources and Learning & Development Executive and Consultant, I/O Psychologist, Master Trainer and Coach dedicated to enriching lives and accelerating success.
1. Hack your brain with the power of “yet” – Think of how differently your brain would perceive these two statement: “I’m really not good at learning languages“ versus “I haven’t figured out the grammar of this language YET”; The word YET tells your brain that you plan on sticking to it and figuring it out and that it needs to generate options and strategies to help you master the grammar, whereas the first one tells your brain it’s OK to give up. So, monitor your words, and when you feel like saying you are bad at something, phrase it as something you haven’t mastered YET.
2. Unlearning is at least as important as learning- Nobody has a 100% Growth Mindset and nobody has a 100% Fixed Mindset, so you can focus on unlearning some common beliefs to be more growth-oriented. For example, instead of thinking of setbacks as mistakes, reframe them as learning. Instead of thinking of challenges as obstacles, approach them as opportunities to develop new talents and skills. Also, when you see someone you consider “super smart” in action, remind yourself that most likely they had to make many mistakes and work really hard to be where they are today.
3. Cultivate Self-approval- Stop seeking approval from others and accept yourself as a “work in constant and never-ending progress” and praise yourself (yes, I said praise yourself) for persevering, for improving a strategy, for figuring something out, for learning, for making any kind of progress and even for giving it your best effort. But don’t stop there! Use your fresh accomplishment to establish a new goal to keep yourself motivated and constantly learning.

4 年This is a great. Thanks for sharing! I am confident to say that in my years of experience, I have managed to adapt No 1 and No 2 effectively. No 3 is something I see I could surely work on this year. ??
I will definitely think about adding yet more often. It is easy to believe that just because things have always been one way they will remain so. Feeling empowered to adopt the growth mentality.

4 年Who would have thought that "yet" could be such a powerful word Fernando Cuevas, I love this and so important to cultivate self-approval. How can we expect others to recognise our efforts if we don't recognise our own.
