3 things I learned from student survey data on AI

With help from some friends, I surveyed 122 high school students regarding their perceptions and use of AI.
(1) The vast majority of surveyed students (73.7%) are either non-users or very infrequent users of AI. Only 26.2% use AI tools on a weekly or more frequent basis while regular, power users (daily or more) are quite rare at 9%. The most common pattern is occasional monthly use. This suggests that while AI tools are available, they haven't yet become a regular part of most students' academic routines. The high number of "never" and "few times per month" responses indicates that AI tools are still viewed as supplementary rather than essential tools for most students.
(2) Math problem-solving is the most common use among survey respondents, suggesting AI tools are particularly valued for quantitative tasks. However, writing-related tasks (writing, editing, brainstorming) collectively represent a major use case. Study assistance/tutoring is the least common specific use, perhaps indicating less trust in AI for direct learning support. The spread across different tasks suggests AI tools are being used versatilely rather than for just one type of task, and 40% of students said they don't use AI for school at all.
(3) High school students seem more concerned than excited about AI. The ratio of concerned to excited respondents is roughly 3:1. Moderate positions ("somewhat" concerned/excited) are much more common than extreme positions, while nearly half of respondents remain neutral, suggesting a level of uncertainty.

1 周Gen AI in mathematics has been a particular interest and I'm not surprised the students surveyed rated this subject use higher than others on question #2. Perhaps supplemental tools over the years, such as the trig calculator, have made the move to using AI more comfortable in this field. Inspiring AI applications in Geometry, such as Google DeepMind AlphaGeometry, has opened interesting opportunities. I'm curious about the 5 respondents that selected "other", on this question. Perhaps it was art or music, as creativity with AI tools has been popular in this area.

1 周New learning with technological tools can be accomplished with improved training and introductions. AI in most cases has been negatively introduced through television and movies as devices that will take over humanity. AI needs to be continually presented as enhancements and tools to improve life. Robotic surgery is an example!
