3 things in digital (01/14 - 01/17)

Here are the 3 things in digital you need to know from last week.

  1. Chrome Cookie Updates: Google announced that Chrome would end 3rd party cookie support within 2 years. There was a lot written about what this will mean for privacy, advertising, and the adtech sector. The best course of action from the announcement, is, as Google recommends, for agencies, advertisers, and publishers to work with their trade associations to ensure the changes do not adversely impact their business.
  2. NBC unveiled PeacockTV: NBC held the launch event for Peacock TV. Notable is that there will be a free tier, as well a US$4.99 plan and a US$9.99 ad-free plan. NBC is targeting 30-35MM subscribers by 2024 and the service launches to everyone July 15th.
  3. FTC request to Investigate AdBlockers: a US Senator (Ron Wyden) wrote to the FTC asking for them to investigate AdBlockers (PDF link) calling out “unfair, deceptive, and anti-competitive practices”.

And an extra...

Last week, I published an OpEd on MediaPost of the 3 things that will define the next decade in digital 1. Rights, 2. Responsibility, 3. Regulation and if we don't deliver on these 3, then there will be a 4th "the Reckoning". You can read the OpEd here.
