3 Things to Consider Before Turning on LinkedIn Creator Mode (plus a tool, resource, and gossip)

Last January, I attended my first Clubhouse event, where a few LinkedIn and Microsoft employees shared the news about our profiles getting a new feature called Creator Mode. As they were going through all of the benefits of this new feature, I got excited about the possibilities. Still, it also left me with many convictions and a few ideas for the proverbial suggestion box.
Consider This...
When you turn on Creator Mode, a few things will change:
Consideration #1: Connect Button vs. Follow Button
Depending on your goals for using LinkedIn, this change could dramatically reduce organic invites you receive to connect, grow, and nurture your network.
Do you want your content to go viral and build a following, do you want to grow your network and have REAL conversations to drive new business, or do you want to create a hybrid strategy?
When people follow you, they can only see your updates in the newsfeed. You cannot build a relationship with these people in your message inbox.
People CAN still send a connection request, but they have to jump through a couple of hoops to find that connect button. Most are lazy and won't take the time or even know where to find it (especially on mobile devices), decreasing your opportunity to grow your network organically.
Consideration #2: Are you creating content, and is it bringing in new business?
The latest trend on LinkedIn is consistent content creation, and LinkedIn is encouraging it (hence the new Creator Mode and Creator University).
I have seen a massive uptick in the Millenial and GenZ generations using the newsfeed like Instagram or TikTok. These generations love this type of content (the selfies, the motivational posts, stories, inspirational videos) and will regularly go viral. The newsfeed has become very casual compared to even 3-4 years ago.
But does this strategy align with your business-driven goals?
It can take months or even a year or more to get this kind of visibility and engagement.
Consideration #3: First Impressions
When someone lands on your profile and views it, what do you want it to say about you?
In my opinion, if you're not taking full advantage of all these fantastic features, why bother?
Or, in my case, I use a HYBRID approach depending on my goals for generating new business, speaking gigs, podcast interviews, referrals, etc.

Tracy's "Tool Time" Tip
Speaking of content, have you seen those posts where the text is bold, italic, or in a fun font?
Boy, do I have an excellent tool for you!
This tool is ?? free and can also be used anywhere on LinkedIn, including your profile, company page, posts, and messages.

Resource Roundup
One of my favorite online newsletters is called Social Media Examiner. I have been subscribed to this publication since Michael Stelzner started it.
It covers many topics on all social media platforms, and I have learned quite a bit about other social channels from his emails and podcasts, including LinkedIn! But when I don't have time to read them, I bookmark the newsletters I want to read later.
Gossip Garden
For my first newsletter, I am going to do a shameless plug! I am excited to announce that I am working with Jeff Galvin, CEO of American Gene Technologies, and his PR company On the Marc Media with Kathy Silverstein.
Without too much detail, American Gene's vision is to cure HIV through gene therapy. It's a fascinating science!
We are making over Jeff's profile (before photo above), and it will be completed in about two more weeks. Stay tuned for the final product!
That's a wrap for today! Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for bi-weekly newsletters.
Please subscribe to get notified and share with your colleagues and friends!
Cheers!

2 年In 2020, while everybody was working from home, I used LinkedIn/Sales Navigator to generate leads. It was amazing how well that worked. Since then I haven't used LinkedIn much. Thinking of getting back into the game. Looking for a product/service to use this platform again. Thanks for posting your newsletter.

2 年Hi Tracy, Well done, and excellent tips for those of us with a large following, but not into a strategy of mega content creation. My priorities have mainly been gaining more business relationships more than gaining a following, so the Creator mode, at least so far, does not seem to offer a benefit outweighing its drawbacks. I had suspected as much but thanks for making this very clear in your post.
