3 Things That Will Boost Your Bio
Of all the things we have to do as speakers, writing about yourself is probably the hardest.
While you may own the stage when talking about your topic, talking about yourself is a different story and it is often one that many speakers struggle to tell. However, telling this story is essential if you are going to sell yourself as a speaker.
Your bio is the snapshot of you as an expert that will be used by event managers, conference organisers and bureaus when promoting an event involving you. It also stands front and centre of your website.
Capturing your essence and squeezing it into 200 words can seem like a near impossible task!
But here’s how you can make it easy.
As it is being used across a range of platforms and contexts, it must tell your story in a way that is universal and transferable. Going into too much depth or writing it for specific events or industries distracts from the core of your message and from its effectiveness as a promotional tool.
Whether you outsource your bio to a copy writer or write it yourself, it not only needs to be universally applicable, but it also must be specifically valuable.
??What value do you offer to your clients and their audiences?
??A bio is all about communicating your ‘why me’ message.
??Why should an events manager look to you for their team building event?
??What makes you more of an expert than someone else?
??How are you more relatable or inspirational for your audience than anyone else?
??Why can you personally deliver the outcomes in your topics?

The trick is, however, to communicate this ‘why me’ without actually making it about you.
Rather than using it as a 200-word grandstanding opportunity, the bio is where you reveal your unique value offering.
Your bio is actually not about you, but about what value you have to offer your client and their audiences.
The secret to doing this is to find your holy trinity: the three things that encapsulate why you get to be an expert speaker on your topic.
It is important that your bio covers fundamental things like your professional history, your qualifications, your awards, your publications and any personal experiences that are relevant to your expertise.
But, finding your sacred three, or your holy trinity, guarantees that these messages will be communicated succinctly, objectively and universally.
Your three things may not be stand-outs on their own, but when you put them together, they become what makes you unique.
Using the questions above, what three things, when put together, shows your undeniable value to your clients and their audiences?
Think outside the box! If you’re a leadership expert, what do you bring to the table? Is it something about you as an individual, or perhaps something in your experience?
Not only will focusing your bio on the value you deliver for your clients and their audiences make it more effective, it also makes it much easier to write.
So, what are the three things that summarise your value proposition and make you a speaker like no other?
What are your three things?
