3 things that boost business success and longevity

3 things that boost business success and longevity

Last week we celebrated our 15th birthday which is a fantastic achievement! And it got us thinking about how we got from day 1 to year 15 – what things have changed and what has stayed the same.

We realised that there are 3 important things that we could attribute our success and longevity to – Having a clear vision Embracing change and Powering up our people.

1. Having a clear vision

This is YourDMS’s mission statement. When you have a clear vision for your business, it’s almost like a set of ‘guidelines’ to help you at every stage. When you are making decisions, you can refer to the vision and ask, ‘How does this fit with our vision?’, ‘Will this help us deliver our vision?’. If the answer is no, then don’t do it. Just make sure you share your vision with your team so that you are all working towards the same goal.

This also helps with setting and meeting/exceeding expectations for your team, for customers, for prospects, for stakeholders – which is important for building trust and loyalty.

And it’s ok for the vision to evolve as things change and your business grows because successful businesses understand the importance of…?

2. Embracing change

Nothing stays the same in business and it’s essential that your business and your team can adapt and embrace change. This looks different for every business, every team and every customer.

When YourDMS first started, we focussed on selling Document Management systems but our MD, Stewart Wright, knew that to continue to thrive and innovate, we would need to offer our customers more. We have partnered with technology developers, creating an eco system, which allows us to increase our offering of services and solutions. This allows us to provide end-to-end solutions or ‘plug the gaps’ in existing tech and processes. Which really means giving our customers the right solution to work for their business, now and in the future.

We are in the tech industry and things change at an alarming rate. And while we need to be aware of the ‘next big thing’, our customers might not be ready for it straight away. We need to understand what our customers are ready for, and when it’s the right time for them to embrace something new, so that we can support our customers on their jouney of change and digital transformation.

We also need to support our team and embracing change can also look like…

3. Powering Up Your People

Without an amazing team, you don’t have a business. It’s that simple. So, it’s essential to build a strong, dedicated, and happy team. But how do you do this?

We continually train our staff on the new solutions we provide. Not only does this keep the team growing and developing, it means when our customer calls in they speak to someone that knows their solutions right away.

When a customer calls in, it might be a company wide query or just at an individual level. By understanding the caller and their level of ability, whether they are new or how much something is impacting their work in that particular moment, really enables us to build a long happy relationship. And it’s a great feeling when you’ve helped someone solve a problem and made their day a little bit easier.

Do you agree? Every business is different. If you have been in business for a long time, what 3 things would you say have boosted your success and longevity? Tell us in the comments.

?Sea Sanctuary

Sea Sanctuary is a unique mental health charity and one of the world’s leading exponents of blue health, the concept that ‘blue spaces’, such as the sea, are beneficial for people’s mental and emotional wellbeing.

Based in Penryn, Cornwall, the Sea Sanctuary team has had years of success combining evidence-based therapies and counselling methods with marine-based activities that give people an invigorating sense of adventure along with the help and support they need to lift their spirits, overcome issues and find their sense of wellbeing.

Sea Sanctuary takes therapy out of the office and onto the water – it’s a recipe that has helped hundreds of people improve their mental and emotional wellbeing since the charity was launched in 2006.

By taking small groups of people sailing on a boat for several days, it puts them in control of their lives once again by helping them to reconnect with nature, the sea, other people and with themselves.

As Joe Sabien, founder and CEO of mental health charity Sea Sanctuary, explains, “For everyone in the world, there is wellbeing formula. We just need to find it. That’s why we can’t give up on people. For us it is about helping people be their own anchor. It’s about giving them hope again.”
