3 STEPS FOR YOUNG COLLEGE GRADUATES TO DISCOVERING THE PURPOSE OF THEIR LIFE

As a young college graduate or an industry newcomer, determining a clear career path that aligns with your life's purpose can be one of the most challenging questions you must attempt to answer. This article will go through a step-by-step process exploring your feelings and options. By the end, you should have a reasonably reliable tool you can immediately employ to help give it a meaningful direction!

The process of discovering your life's purpose consists of three steps:

1. Recognizing the principle of choice

2. Establishing your "overarching principle"

3. Aligning your life to this fundamental principle

Understanding the Choice Principle

This is what Norman Vincent Peale says about the power of choice. "The most powerful tool we all have is our ability to choose." It is a fact that if you have been struggling with unhappiness, you can choose to be joyful instead. Lift yourself into joy with effort. If you are fearful, you can overcome your misery by choosing courage. The choices made determine the overall trend and the quality of anyone's life."

"Choosing" is an important activity of your mind because it communicates your desires to your subconscious mind. When your subconscious learns about your desires, it will go to any length to make them a reality. The decisions you make in life become your goal. And, if you are sincere in your pursuit, there is simply no reason why you should fail.

In contrast, indecision causes frustration and anxiety and can confuse your subconscious about what you want. However, your decisions must be your own, based on your true desires, goals, and abilities. Many of us let others make our decisions for us, or we make our decisions based on what we believe is 'correct,' even if it means going against our wishes. What is suitable for someone else may not be right for you, and the only way to tell is to listen to your heart.

To begin with, make a list of things that interest you or that you have always enjoyed, things that make you feel better, and things that inspire you to keep going no matter what obstacles you face. Do you enjoy doing something creative or artistic? Do you enjoy being outside? Do you enjoy the sea? Do you like assisting others? Do you enjoy making a difference in other people's lives?

Write down whatever piques your interest and respond to the following questions:

What is your favorite activity?

What do you like about this thing, and why?

How could you do this for money and make a living?

Developing Your Overarching Principle

The next step is to review your list and see if there is any recurring theme. It may be the effect of specific experiences in your life. Whatever it is, try to identify the central theme of what you enjoy doing and express it in a short and precise statement. This is your 'Mission Statement.' It could be a famous person's quote or a philosophy that has influenced you. Of course, as you grow older, this statement may change, but its heart will remain the same. Now, draught your Mission Statement.

Here's my mission statement, which highlights the central theme of my life and perfectly aligns with my fundamental principle:

"I am on a mission to help 100,000 graduating students and industry freshers develop healthy self-esteem & boost their confidence and give them a head start in their careers."

Aligning Your LIFE with Your Fundamental Principle

The final step in this journey is to chart your course to your ultimate goal and to start making changes that will help you align your daily life with your underlying goal. You can start living this principle daily by making minor changes to your lifestyle. It may take a few days, but becoming aware and intentional about this underlying principle of your life will undoubtedly make a difference in your overall enthusiasm for life. When it comes to choosing the right career, choose jobs or start a business that is most aligned with your mission. Most people are unhappy because what they do for a living is misaligned with their purpose and mission, causing them to be sad all of the time. If you want to live a truly fulfilling and happy life, make sure you make the right career choices. Money will come, and much will come from doing what you love and being of great service.

That's all there is to it! By following the steps outlined above, you will be well on your way to discovering and living your purpose. And, as you go through this process, just remember, "You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it courageously." - Steve Maraboli.

As an undergraduate instructor I share similar words with my upper division classes. These are important concepts that should be reinforced from the 3rd year on! Thank you PERSEUS UDACHIA for the reminder!
