3 Steps to Release Worry
Misty Buck
Combining my role as the owner of a dynamic digital marketing agency with my passion as a Mental Health and Performance Coach.
"Stop worrying."
"You're overreacting."
And my personal favorite: "Calm down."
When have any of these phrases actually helped anyone?? What I've begun to realize over the years is that when it comes to worrying, for me, usually the best way to let it go is to follow a system of steps.?
Before I get into what those steps are, keep in mind that sometimes the process takes longer due to the nature of whatever is going on. For example, am I just trying to get through a challenging day, or am I facing a much bigger challenge? Sometimes, I have to repeat the same step a few times, or I have to repeat the series of steps.
Secondly, I often incorporate a holistic mind/body/soul approach to almost everything I do because it's all connected. If I don't engage in one of these areas, I may end up with a blind spot. Also, I seem to relax and trust more quickly when I combine a holistic approach.?
Here are the 3 steps:
Step 1: Embrace it with gratitude. First and foremost, in times of ease, and times of stress, I'm grateful. I'm grateful when things are fun and easy, and I'm grateful for challenges because I know they are leading me somewhere. For me, this means taking time to say "thank you" to God and all the souls guiding me. Embracing whatever is going on puts me back in the driver's seat because I'm not trying to fight things I have no control over, and I'm not making myself feel worse and therefore holding myself back.?
Step 2: Allow for a physical outlet or expression. This might look like journaling, hitting the weights, or going for a run or a walk. I also might do a tapping meditation, a breathing exercise, or incorporate mindful movement. The idea is to listen to what I think I need to do to clear the space in my head, and then follow that. The added benefit is that the incorporation of physical activity can help lower cortisol, which is your stress hormone. Connect with yourself, and physically give yourself an outlet to let go of some of the stress. Tune into your body rather than turn away from it.?

Step 3: Remind myself of the big three: Self-Compassion/Love, Trust, and Patience. I can be self-compassionate by reminding myself that I am always doing my best, I'm always learning and growing, I can forgive myself for my mistakes, and that's enough. By doing this, I am extending love to myself which helps lessen stress levels. I remind myself to have more trust because "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1) No one knows the future so I can get curious and be hopeful by asking myself questions like, "what's the best that can happen?" Finally, I can have patience with myself and patience with others as I navigate whatever I'm worried about. I can pause and breathe before speaking, making a decision, or reacting.?
Step 4: Choose my mindset and action. Now that I have tuned into myself mentally, physically, and spiritually, I can choose my intention and my next actions. I can choose the mindset that I'll bring to whatever I'm facing. And, I can come back to this place simply by taking a few deep breaths if I find myself falling off balance.??
The more you practice this, the more peace and joy you'll find. It will not eliminate "your worries and your strife" nor will it make you immune to difficulties, but with some focus and practice on the fundamental "bare necessities," you'll be able to move forward quicker. (Bonus points if you get what I just did there. lol)
