3 Steps to Being a Great Mentee

Your responsibility as a mentee is not to be a doormat and blindly follow everything your mentor says. This is not a boss/underling relationship.

Being a mentee bears with it a weight to be worthy of mentorship, and with that worthiness, there should be mutual respect in the relationship. Respect for you as the student and respect for the mentor as the teacher.

All highly successful people have mentors. If you’re serious about transcending your current situation, you’ll truly seek out wisdom from those further along in their journey. ?A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.? Proverbs 18:2 ESV

Whatever your belief system, that statement is loaded with truth. If you can’t listen more than you speak, you’ll never hear more than your own voice or ideas.

To be a great mentee, you need to listen and listen well.

"Nature has given us two ears, two eyes, and but one tongue-to the end that we should hear and see more than we speak."

Before starting, we should understand the need to listen, we'll only hear our own voice. Thus never learning anything new.

"When you know what you want, and you want it bad enough, you'll find a way to get it."

3 steps to being a great mentee

Step 1: Know why

• Do a deep dive into yourself and your business. Having a mentor is a need, yes, but being specific about where you are in your journey is paramount.
• I get it, you're awesome, but there are always opportunities to get, and do, better.
• Find your inconsistency, weaknesses, shortcomings, etc. The more specific you get here, the faster your mentor will be able to guide you to growth in that area.

Step 2: Be open

• Be willing to change everything about your current situation. Be teachable. Be a sponge. Have a growth mindset.
• The more willing you are to challenge your own beliefs, the quicker you'll develop a fresh outlook.
• A mentor can only lead you as far as you're willing to go.

Step 3: Know what

• Understand the relationship.
• Your mentor is not responsible for providing specific step-by-step solutions or a roadmap for improvement, but rather direction for you to take action yourself.
• A mentor's responsibility is to be a catalyst for your change, to offer a different way - not so you can go their way, but so that you can discover your own way.
