Gain clarity of where you want to be

Clarity about what you want and need in your professional life is perhaps one of the most critical things in your journey. Spend a significant amount of your time sharpening your axe. Ask yourself what your career goal is? Do you truly want to be a CXO? If you do, what kind of roles are you are targeting? What is the kind of organisation are you most suited for (MNC, Indian company, a family-owned business, or a start up? Do you need international experience, or do you need to work across different areas of business? Above all, is this goal aligned with your purpose and core values.

2. Where are you today?

Assessing yourself realistically is a great way to identity the gaps between where you are today and where you want to be in the future. Do a detailed SWOT analysis for yourself. Design your “Career Identity Map”. Without knowing your key strengths and superpowers along with what’s most important to you in your work, it’s easy to land in the wrong job or wrong-fit company.

Career identity map

Your personalised "Career Identity Map" is a picture of the professional you: who you are, what you offer, and where you thrive at this point in your career. Your map reveals the key qualities that define your perfect next role and career path. With a "Career Identity Map", you will have a custom blueprint to ensure your next role is a perfect fit role for you.

How good are you at Emotional Intelligence? How good is your executive presence? How strategic are you? How good are you at presenting or story telling? Do you need to upgrade your mindset or professional skills? Are you chasing shiny objects or are you clear on where you want to be? This requires an unbiased view, and this is where a CXO coach can help you uncover your blind spots.

3. What do you need to do to get there?

The job you do currently, is very different from the job you are expected to do as a CXO. Do you know what is expected of you as a CXO??Do you know what a CEO expects from a CXO? Do you have the identity and self-belief to get there or is it hope and desire?

If there is a leadership development or talent planning cell within your organisation, they may have reached out to you, if you are in the considered set of potential leaders. If not, have a conversation with your boss or HR to understand your position and their plans for you.

CXO Leadership Traits

How do you rate yourself on the Leadership traits above? Are doing well on most parameters or do you need to do more work on yourself ? You may conclude that it may be a good time to look outside your organisation. Are you aware of the “unpublished job market? Understand that up to 80% of senior roles are never advertised so how are you going to get there?

If you knew what to do, and?taken action, you would have either been a CXO or gone beyond by now. If you have not, It’s time to get yourself a strategic professional CXO coach. Some who has been a CXO in real life and is certified globally (ICF-PCC).
