Job Search Guide for International Talent - Can this be the next resource that will help you advance your career?
This week's edition is dedicated ONLY to all international job seekers ??????????
Especially after all the energy I received leading the first-ever Career Event in the heart of Europe for more than 300+ international students last week ??
Heading the career services at a top business school in the heart of Europe, my heart breaks every time I hear one of these questions over and over again...
?? "Albert... Will I be able to land a job after graduation as an international?"
?? "How can I find companies that are open to hiring international talent and sponsoring my visa?"
?? "Where can I find jobs that do not require only a native level in all the local languages?"
?? "Is there anyone I can talk & connect with who has gone through the job market coming from the same background/country?"
As yet, far too many companies have very restrictive hiring requirements such as:
?? Only hiring talent that speaks fluently/natively the local languages:
For example in Belgium, where I help hundreds of talent find a job, that is having to speak French & Dutch natively - a requirement you find in most of job vacancies and companies.
?? Only hiring talent that has all the work permit rights in place:
This is the quesiton I asked to more than 100+ HR directors: "Are you open to hiring international talent?" And the answer I often receive is: "Yes, we are very open to all talents although we cannot sponsor visa. If they have a work permit already yes, we have people from country X and Y!
Although there is a shift ongoing ??
Many companies are moving more and more into being open to all talents, hiring for English-speaking roles and/or with visa sponsorship possibilities!
But in reality... There is still a BIG GAP on opportunities available to international talent looking for a work/residence permit ????
And that's why this edition is dedicated exclusively to you and supporting your job search as a top international candidate!
Continue reading to get the 3-step super guide to navigate the job market and advance your career as an international candidate!
?? 3-Step Super Job Search Guide For International Talent!
Here is a set of 3 super strategies that you or any friend as an international job seeker can use to focus your job search and energies on what matters most to maximize your opportunities to get hired and live/work where you truly want!
?? Step 1 - "Find Companies Open to International Talent"
As an international candidate looking for jobs just on job boards will limit you even more your options and drain your emotional energies given 80% of the jobs are not posted online , and the 20% of jobs remaining, as explained above, have very limiting requirements (e.g., native local languages).
So... It's all about focusing your job search research on what matters most - companies that excite you and that seem to be open to internationals.
Do this instead:
?? Make a target list of companies you would find meaningful & exciting.
?? Go to the company's LinkedIn page and filter by people & location.

?? Look if the profiles of people are international or mostly local by skimming through and checking out their employee's LinkedIn profiles in the location you are interested in working/living in!
?? Verify this by checking their careers page and seeing various roles (not only the ones you are interested in) if there are any open to international talent.
?? Refine your list - taking in and out companies as you research deeper!
?? You now have a list of companies that excite you that seem to be open to internationals using this research process!
?? Step 2 - "Leverage International Talent Working in Your Target Employers"
In this step let's test further if the target list of companies is truly open to international talent in your desired location + find a list of contacts you can leverage coming from the same country/international background as you.
Here is how:
?? Type anything in the LinkedIn search bar. Literally "asfnklasf" works to get into > advanced filters¨then into > all filters section:
?? Then we are going to do an advanced search of people in your desired location in all the companies in your target list from step 1:
?? Add the following magic touch to filter for the top schools/universities in your country in the advanced filters - bonus including your university:
?? You now have a list of people who work for your target companies that seem to be open to international talent coming from your country so you can apply more confidently, and even connect & get advice from these contacts on your job search/application process. Here is a LinkedIn message I curated for you to use:
"Hi [Name], I came across your profile looking for people who made the jump to work internationally in [Desired Industry] from [Country you both come from]. Your journey with [Company Name], one of my dream employers, is a source of motivation now in my job search. If you don't mind me asking, what resource/advice was most helpful in your journey?"
?? Step 3 - "Surprise Employers as a Top International Candidate"
What to do once you find all these companies & opportunities?
It is time to surprise these employers open to international talent with your super career proactivty, interests and what you are capable of using "the 3 strategies to surprise employers" I shared in the previous newsletter edition.
These can help you maximize your chances of being their ideal candidate and accelerate the process of getting you into the company sponsoring your visa!
