Wherever you are… BE THERE
1)?????You’re taking calls and emails at every hour of the day
2)?????Your mind is always thinking business
3)?????You have no outside hobbies
I see this all the time with advisors. They feel excellent client service is being available, all the time at a moments notice.
You know the person – they are the ones always missing the kids hockey game, or on the phone doing business while their kid is playing sports or at the dinner table. It’s not just advisors – it’s entrepreneurs in general.
I know this because I too was once like them. Last week, on a particular Thursday that was me. We were at the hockey rink getting ready to go on the ice (I am one of the coaches), and on the way to rink I was doing business, my daughter was in the back and even when we got to rink I was still on the phone.
Finally, I had to stop myself and realize NO, this isn’t what I want. I was trying to do way too many things and be there for everybody and instead I was there for no one. I told my daughter I have to stop, and I shut off the webinar that I was on and got ready for hockey.

Have you ever felt this way?
I had a client once who said if he’s on vacation he will take a call from the client. I wonder what his client thinks and I couldn’t help but think oh my goodness so if you’re sipping a beverage of choice on the beach in Mexico and a client calls you with something you’re going to get it done?????
99% of an advisor's business isn’t urgent. Most stuff can wait.
In return for your so called “urgency” you are sacrificing your relationships and you’re sacrificing “YOU."
Here’s the point. If you don’t start to take time off your business will suffer, if it hasn't already. Perhaps you've already plateaued, earning the same amount the last 2-4 years.
In order to grow and earn more you must step away. I’ve seen it time and time again. But to do that you have to do something that’s uncomfortable and many advisors aren’t willing to to do that.
?So if you find yourself taking calls at all times of day, with no hobbies, you likely need to start taking some time off.
Go out do something you enjoy (for me 9 times out of 10 it’s hockey related) and watch the growth in your personal and professional life.
