3 signs to look for in a new job to know you are making the right move

You are choosing an employer, as much as they are choosing you, so your move to a new employer is not complete until you are settled into the company and feel that you are in your place.

During your first period, usually first 3-6 months, it is very important to interact with your new colleagues and look out for these signs in your new workplace.

Sign #1- A positive working environment

This is a very easy one to spot. I'd argue that you could actually see it in people's faces and body language.

I am not talking about the chocolate factory where everyone is singing and dancing.

Look at everyone around you and observe how they conduct themselves doing their work. A positive work environment is usually one which is constantly moving forward. There are is no dwelling on problems. Challenges are welcomed and are dealt with. Most people offering to help. A relatively clear flow of communication.

In today's world and age, with the abundance in opportunities out there, an unhappy workforce will no longer stick around, regardless of the benefits, so this would give you enough comfort knowing that this sign is a reliable one.

Sign #2- Opportunities to learn and grow

Talk with your new colleagues and see how far they have come through the company. This is one of my favourite interactions with people as i really enjoy listening to different stories.

What happens when people make mistakes or errors? How much freedom is given to you to carry out meaningful work and increment your skills.

Sure, progress means and looks different to each of us and I'd encourage you to be open to the different prospects of growth.

Sign #3- Empathetic leaders

Probably one of the most important signs, because this drives a lot of the behaviours in the working environment. Leaders who seem to care will attract like-minded people and this will enforce the overall supporting and positive behaviour within the business.

Empathetic leaders are easy to spot, always approachable and are good, active listeners.

Having an empathetic leader will help you settle quicker and you will find it easier for them to understand your personal circumstances and offer you enough, reasonable, flexibility around them.

Flexibility and work-life balance are a continuous conversation in the workplace and they change for individuals throughout time, so an empathetic leader will understand that and act accordingly.

Try to interact as much as possible with your colleagues and observe these signs in the organisation. Make sure to give yourself enough time to get used to the new environment around you and don't be shy to ask questions. Always try to clearly communicate and be as upfront as possible.
