3 Signs of Burnout According to WHO

A 2024 report found that 50% of people had experienced workplace burn-out.

Burn-out is rotten. Been there. Worn the T-shirt. It was officially recognised by the World Health Organisation, (WHO) in 2019?as an?"occupational phenomenon".??

WHO define burn-out as?a "syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed".

3 Signs of Burn-Out:

  1. Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;
  2. Increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and
  3. Reduced professional efficacy.

I see many burnt out clients. Often, high performers that are overly responsible and working long hours. They care too much.?

They're scared to speak up about how they are feeling. It's not like having a broken leg that you can point to. Mental health issues can trigger feelings of shame; making people feel like they are failing in some way.?

However, 9 times out of 10 when the individual is brave enough to speak up, the employer falls over themselves to provide support to help them recover. This is because they are valued - the poor burnt out person just doesn't value themselves...yet! It's often comorbid with pesky imposter syndrome too.

3 Things Which Can Help:

  1. Seek support either with a coach or therapist. Share what's going on with your employer and agree priorities. Delegate and stop the flow of new tasks.
  2. Set a working hours target. Make a deal with yourself. Set an alarm for when it's time to leave work. Then leave! Stop all weekend and evening work. Stop carrying over your annual leave. Go and book a break now!
  3. Take charge and look after yourself. Eat, sleep and exercise well. Investigate hobbies. Engage in activities that my YOU happy.

Wishing you all the very best.

Morning Estelle, I've worked successfully with many people who have experienced burn-out, many successful business men and women. As you say it's so important to seek help to change habits, and get back to a point of being in control of your life. It is possible isn't it! Burn-out is not a fixed state of being. Here's to continuing with good work helping people re-ignite their passion.
