I hear this over and over — we have good culture… we pay our people well… and we have great benefits.?I was in this camp at one time.? In the words of Mark Twain, “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you in trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”?
Outdated mindsets and strongly held beliefs from past success are leading to a doubling down on control, focus on profitability, short-term results, and growth, as well as compensation and a mixture of “band-aid” benefits. That’s why today’s workplace culture is broken, and we have an epidemic of loneliness and lack of meaning in our work.?
Culture is the most important aspect of business.?This means that people and purpose must be first and second priorities not profits and growth.?
In this blog series, we are visiting the loneliness and lack of meaning epidemic in workplace culture.? Gallup has called it the Great Detachment.? Recent surveys consistently reveal the unrest in many workplace cultures.? People are not finding fulfillment or real meaning in their work.? Trust is at an all-time low.? Burnout, disengagement, stress, lack of belonging, and lack of trust impact each of us differently.? Whether it’s you personally, ?a team member, ?a friend or a family member, you are being impacted by this upside-down culture.?
Magnetic energy is the cure to this workplace dilemma, and the power to transform this culture is in our hands.?Yes, you and me. There are three secrets to Magnetic Energy in workplace culture, and it takes all three to transform the workplace from lonely, meaningless jobs to thriving teams.?
Dare to Believe is the first secret.?Secret Two: Dare to Trust First and provide each other with the benefit of good intentions. High performance is always connected with high trust. Yet, when we say Trust First, most of us withdraw immediately.? Why?
It’s easy, really — we have all had our trust broken.?As a boss, leader, team member, family member, friend or professional, we have had our trust broken many times. It takes courage to trust first because we have to be vulnerable.? Anytime we trust someone, we go at a personal risk.?However, if we can push through this fear when we trust first, it creates energy and more trust in our relationships.?
We can be smart with our trust.?We certainly should weigh the opportunities and risks of trusting first and we know there will be individuals who prove to not worthy of our trust. If we start with the mindset of providing the benefit of good intentions, we will seek to understand before we judge.?Quick judgment leads to low trust, so let’s intentionally seek to understand first.?Many times, problems with trust are communication issues where alignment and clarity in expectations are not present. Fuzzy Agreements, for example.?
Maybe the best way to demonstrate the power of this secret — Trust First — is for us to reflect on a time when someone clearly trusted us first.?Think about a time when someone unexpectedly expressed their trust in you, communicated it, maybe gave you the keys to their house or car, or introduced you to their biggest customer, best friend, or parents.?Whatever the event, you knew immediately this person is trusting me.? Pause and reflect with me here and vividly describe this experience.?
Now, usually, two things happen when someone trusts us outwardly and first. For me, I immediately recognize this as a gift and I lean in more.? I want to be worthy of this trust.?I want to meet these expectations.?My energy level and focus go up, even if it’s simply driving their car.?Second, I move them up on my trustworthy ladder.?It is easier now for me to trust them and provide them with the benefit of good intentions.?Have you had similar experiences?
That’s the power of Trusting First, it creates more trust, buy-in and energy.?It is a game changer for teams, friends, and even family when we trust first and provide each other the benefit of good intentions.?
Who will you trust and provide the benefit of good intentions this week??
