“The 3 ‘R’s’ Of Transformational NLP”

(With apologies to the traditional 3 R’s of the American elementary school curriculum: "Reading, (W)Riting and (A)Rithmetic")

Transformational Neuro-linguistic Programming is a unique resource (a blend of information, insights, discoveries, tools, and techniques) for exploring, understanding, and changing our human experience. Transformational NLP is never bossy or prescriptive. It does not tell anyone what to value or how to be. When it’s used for creative change work, it centers around a few initial questions: “What would you like?,” or “What are you experiencing that you do not want to experience any longer?,” or “What are you not experiencing that you would like to be?” Beginning from right here, we begin to work with our own “3 R’s,” and all three are blended throughout each hour and day of the course.

Revealing

Transformational NLP begins from the presupposition that our human experience—past, present, and future—is sourced out of some vast and vastly unconscious processes that occur in our brains and bodies. Good NLP change work brings some of these mysterious, magical processes into other levels of awareness—conscious awareness––where we can pay attention to how our experience is being created. We reveal what our brains have been up to! (This is a most amazing piece of our Core toolset, and the very basics of it can be taught and learned in just a few hours.) We then refine our awareness and choices about what it is that we would like. We notice how our internal patterns will have to change so that they can deliver what we truly want now and in the future. But before we proceed to change anything, we pause to pay proper regard to our dignity and strength. We call this “respecting what has been, as well as what can be.”

Respecting

Another of our presuppositions is that, throughout our lives, we are and have been doing the best we could with the actual options that have been available to us on our life’s menu. This seems really radical, because just about all conventional considerations and methods for personal growth and change are predicated on the opposite idea—that we could/should have done better than we did and are. We all do want to be doing better, but the “reality-sourcing software” that has been generating what we do not want cannot be asked to create what we do want, because we all know that’s not how software works! For software to produce a difficult outcome, it has to be re-written, and we cannot elegantly re-write anything while we are caught up in a process of righteously attacking it.

Revising

Learning to change aspects of our “reality programming” (which includes both our sense of “the world out there” and our sense of our “self in here”) is the easiest part of the whole Core curriculum. When we reveal how things have been being created (both our wanted and unwanted experience), and after we have learned to no longer try to use self-attack as a positive tool for life-fulfillment, then revising things becomes a relatively simple task.
