I get this question all the time. I have people in their 70’s ask me this. I have people in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s ask this. I know people in their late 20’s are even wondering about it too...
It’s because we all have this common worry that we’re not good enough, or that we’ve missed the bus on something everyone else seemed to automatically know. Part of the reason we think our age disqualifies us is genuine fear (will we be able to do it?), and part is blaming our problems on something we can’t control (age) so it doesn't feel like our responsibility anymore.
3 Reasons You're Not Too Old For College:
- From a financial perspective, if you’ve got at least 45 weeks to live, you’re not too old to reap the financial benefits of a bachelor’s degree. When you look at the US economy as a whole, a bachelor’s degrees usually bumps your earnings by 65%. If you spent < $15,000 on college (like we show you how to on our YouTube channel and in our consultations) and you were making $700 a week and then start making $1,200 a week with a bachelor’s degree, it would only take you around 30 weeks to pay for your degree with the increased pay alone!
- From a mental perspective. Are you still smart enough to go to college if you’re not 18? According to an MIT article the brain is good at different things at different stages in life, and what is college anyway? It’s working hard to follow instructions and get work done. The older you are, the more experience you have with this and the better you are at it. Plus, your real aptitude mostly comes down to motivation. If you want it, you’ll get it. And the more you want it, the easier it’ll be to do the work.
- From a time perspective. A lot of adults think they can’t go back to college because they’re too busy with family or work, and that might be true for many. But the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the average American has about 3 hours of leisure time per day and that we spend roughly an hour and 45 minutes of it watching TV. If you’ve watched some of our YouTube videos, you know it’s possible to graduate from college in two years working just 10 hours a week. Most people can just take 10 TV-watching-hours, turn them into study time, and start college. Everyone's life is different, but if you can spare even just three or five hours a week, you can get started in a meaningful way.
So there you have it. If you've been convincing yourself you're too old for college, take some time to evaluate what you really mean when you say that. Is it a financial concern? A mental concern? A time-based concern? We encourage you to get more specific about why being "old" would disqualify you. And then do some research to see if that fear is actually fact-based! Like with the above examples, we think you'll be surprised.
