3 Reasons Why You’re Not Getting Interviews

3 Reasons Why You’re Not Getting Interviews

Job searching can be an exhausting activity, especially if you find yourself spending all your free time on applications and resume updates, yet you’re still not getting any interviews.

Sound like you?

Then perhaps you are making one of these very common job hunt mistakes. Check them out below.

Mistake #1: You’re relying too much on job boards

The go-to for many job seekers is job boards like Indeed, LinkedIn, and Idealist to name a few. While this is a good way to supplement your job search, it should NOT be 100% of your effort.

In fact, my strong recommendation is that you focus only around 20% of your search on job boards.

Why? Because your application is likely getting lost in a pool of hundreds of applicants for same job.

So, what should you be doing for the other 80% of your time?

Well check out the next mistake for the info.

Mistake #2: You aren’t focusing enough energy on networking

So many of my clients try to get away from network because they think of it in the cheese plate, meet strangers way. Which of course can be scary. But how about we re-frame it a bit.

Think of this question…How many people in your immediate network know you’re conducting a job search? If the answer is “Well, not many” then you are primed to tap into your network. Meaning the people you know already.

My advice is to send the “Help Me Find a Job!” email to your connections. And here is what you should consider when creating the perfect email outreach message.

Give your message a strong start. Let your connection know you are job hunting.

Provide links to the last 2-3 positions you applied to. This gives your connection an idea of what you’re looking for now.

Don’t forget the ask. Think about how this person can help you and make a strong ask. Can they connect you to someone in their network? Would you like to discuss your job search with them via phone? Don’t leave out this pivotal piece.

Attach your resume. Give the connection an idea of what you have done and your career trajectory.

This form of networking has helped so many clients land some valuable information about new opportunities and companies.

And lastly…

Mistake #3: You are applying to EVERYTHING

Desperate times call for desperate measures, right? Wrong!

While it is not necessary to have 100% of the job requirements to apply, you shouldn’t apply to a job in which you aren’t qualified. And you for sure shouldn’t apply to a role you don’t want.

The thought of “If I apply to more than my chances of getting a call-back increase” is not accurate.

If you aren’t a good fit, then you can’t tailor your resume and cover letter to the role. And that is one of the most important ways to get a call back.

So, STOP APPLYING to everything and really focus your search on the following:

  • What you want
  • What you want to do
  • Where you want to work

If you’re waiting for the phone to ring, then you may be making these critical mistakes. And if you want to dive deep into your job search strategy then working with a coach can help.

Loved this article!! I have to say the #3 was one of my biggest mistakes. I was too general in what I was applying. Something good that I learn last year was to find what I really like to do in my career and narrow it down to find my passion.

Job boards make it really easy to apply, which gives job seekers the false impression of getting work done and feeling accomplished if they apply to 20+ jobs in a day. Unfortunately, a low percentage of people are actually hired through those postings, so I agree that it's not worth putting all of your energy into. I'm definitely for upping the networking game- that's where the real wins are. Great article Jasmine Escalera, Ph.D!
