3 reasons why you may not become a CXO

1.Your IDENTITY is holding you back

I have met numerous leaders across the world and when I ask them what is holding them back in their careers, I often hear things like

“I work hard but I don’t get promoted”,

“I know a lot but am unable to speak at meetings”?

?“I haven’t got a degree from a premium educational institute so I am not getting ahead”

“I don’t have an Executive presence”

“I don’t know how to deal with my boss”

“I can’t seem to influence senior management”

Familiar? Is this something you can identify with? What is holding you back?

Identity

It is your identity. Your identity is your belief system that has been shaped by years of experience, interacting with the world ever since you were born. Its your self-image, your judgments about yourself and others. It’s the beliefs, assumptions, and biases you have. It’s the stories that you have been telling yourself for years. You have done this for so long that you believe it even though it may not be true and it's holding you back from achieving your true potential.

Unless you change your identity, your “Limiting beliefs” will keep holding you back. Wondering how you can change your identity? There is a process that covers several self discovery exercises, meditations, affirmations, reprogramming of the human mind and rewiring of your brain ( Neuroplasticity) which I teach in my CXO 90 day Challenge.

2) Your Career is on AUTO PILOT

You have been going to work for years and hoped your career will take care of itself. Over time you realise that even though you thought you were brighter than some of your batch mates they have moved ahead or that your career is stalling. You have probably been developing a product strategy, a division strategy or even an organizational strategy but have never developed your own CAREER STRATEGY. Lifelong employment is now a myth. Mergers, Acquisitions, new owners or getting a new CEO who is tasked with transforming or making your company more profitable or turning it around are a reality. Your career is a dynamic phenomenon and it’s your responsibility to take care of it. Don’t blame your company or your boss as they have many other things to bother about.

Career Development Plan

You have to make a plan and shape your career otherwise your environment (company and economic) will define it for you. It begins with self-awareness and the courage to take an honest look at ones-self. Start with doing a SWOT Analysis along with an environmental analysis and then make SMART goals that you can track and review progress. In my CXO 90 day Challenge I help my cohort go through a 32 page career planning document that we do after several self awareness exercises , meditations and a battery of tests like Personality ,Leadership, Strengths, Values tests etc so that you have enough data to ensure you are on the right track. This career planning document is only a small part of the 36 live sessions that I run over a 90 day period in my CXO 90 day Challenge.

3. Desires and perhaps goals but no SYSTEM

Many leaders have a desire to advance in their careers and become a?CXO or go beyond but few have specific career goals. To make that desire a goal you need to ensure it is a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achieveable, Reviewable and Timebound) goal that you track review and monitor. Some leaders have SMART goals but even then they don’t achieve them. Why? it’s the same reason that even though many teams aspire to win the World Cup only two reach the final and one wins. The difference is having a system that works. A system is a set of routines or habits that one has to ensure incremental improvement every day.

Atomic Habit -Goals and Systems

Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. Getting 1 percent better every day counts for a lot in the long-run. Habits are a double-edged sword. They can work for you or against you, which is why understanding your habits is essential. Small changes often appear to make no difference until you cross a critical threshold. The most powerful outcomes of any compounding process are delayed. You need to be patient, consistent and get inspiration from a stone cutter who keeps hitting a stone a 100 times and suddenly at the 101st strike the stone breaks. As James Clear says "An atomic habit is a little habit that is part of a larger system. Just as atoms are the building blocks of molecules, atomic habits are the building blocks of remarkable results. If you want better results, then forget about setting goals. Focus on your system instead. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems".

If you could done taken action and overcome the above 3 steps on your own , you would have either been a CXO or gone beyond by now. If you have not its time to get yourself a strategic professional career coach. Some who has been a CXO in real life and is certified globally (ICF-PCC).
