3 Reasons To Read Our Latest Research Article

There is plenty to learn and an abundance of useful takeaways to gain from reading this paper; both for individuals who work within Human Resources and for whom an understanding of the role of memory in workplace investigations would benefit their practice, as well as for those who wish to better understand what memory is and why sometimes you just can’t recall the information you need.

1. You’ll Explore Theoretical Ideas Through Narrative?

Author Gabby Gabby Williams presents this information through the act of storytelling: discussing the theory and research through the lens of a hypothetical workplace investigation taking part with different workers within the construction industry. The article takes us on a journey by presenting numerous situations which may arise throughout the investigation process and explains to us why forgetting may occur, the role of emotion in the memory retrieval process, and how the actions of the interviewer and the questions they ask can help or hinder the process. Placing all of this information in context and illustrating it via what could be a real-life scenario is something I greatly value as it helps me digest and visualise the information I am reading.?

2. You’ll Level Up Your Communication Efforts?

There are also a lot of practical tips which Gabby Williams includes across the paper, weaving in evidence-based solutions to combat common pitfalls which can occur during the investigation process and, more broadly, that can occur in day-to-day communication! As someone who is not involved in conducting workplace investigations, I enjoyed drawing the parallels between the setting in which this information was being discussed and how it applies to the conversations I may have with friends or family. This relevance was particularly clear when I was reading the Memories and Testimonies section, as I recognised that the consideration (or lack of!) that I may give when asking a question has a significant impact on the information I receive in return.?

3. You’ll Start Framing Your Questions Differently

After reading this paper, I knew that an understanding of memory, as well as how we can influence someone else’s memory retrieval through the framing of our questions, can greatly accelerate our communication skills which can help develop and maintain relationships. This is where I recognised that the learnings from this paper stem way beyond workplace investigations – they are rooted in the psychology of communication.?

Whilst a compact read, it is filled with insight that is impactful and presented in an accessible and engaging manner. Gabby Williams has written a piece which flows smoothly, is cohesive and immersive – a really enjoyable read that left me more knowledgeable by the end of it.? If you are interested in understanding the role of memory and feel this information is of interest or value to you, I cannot recommend this paper enough.
