Running a restaurant in today's market is more challenging than ever! Here are 3 quick tips to keep you on top of your game!
1. Who you hire is more important than you think.
It can be stressful running short staffed, however letting the wrong people on your team can damage customer service and pull apart your current team. Always hire for character over skills.
Skills you can teach and train. Character you can't change.
2. Do want you say you are going to do.
Nothing destroys your credibility faster than not following through with what you said. Your staff doesn't like it and your customers won't come back because of it. Teach and train this throughout your restaurant because everyone has to be on the same page.
Example: the server takes an order for a medium rare hamburger and the cooks ignore it and send out a well done burger. You just lost face from the customer's point of view.
3. Train your team. Train YOUR team. Train your TEAM!
You need to adopt the Japanese principle of Kaizen which is a philosophy of constant and never ending improvement. Training is not just done when you hire someone. It must continue to keep your team at peak condition. You don't show up at the gym one time, work out and say your now in shape. Restaurants that invest and implement yearly training programs see high score from guests on service, have lower turnover, decreased waste and loss. It's just smart business.
