Let's face it, some days, weeks, and even months can be tricky at work. As more and more millennials enter leadership positions, there's less and less support offered to help these new leaders be successful. Beyond listening to Lizzo, here are 3 pieces of advice that have helped me when things have gone to sh*t:
- Know how you react to bad news. Maybe you need to take a walk. Maybe you need to grab a second V8 energy drink (I always need more caffeine). If you don't know how you react and aren't sure where to start, begin journaling every single day. The data analyst in me loves this. By journaling, you'll begin to identify thoughts and actions that happen during good (and bad) days. Knowing how you react to bad news will improve your resiliency and your ability to bounce back.
- Step the F away. Leadership is about modeling good behavior. Verbaling exploding on others when you're stressed and haven't processed things is NOT good. I have vivid flashbacks of working as an intern and watching senior leaders scream at our team. It was always uncomfortable AND it never solved anything. Not only will yelling when stressed make you an unpleasant leader but it will show your team that it's okay to be verbally abusive. Step away and gain your composure.
- Resist the urge to sit in front of your computer. Working overtime is tempting in unpleasant times but it will never solve your problem. Seriously. You working extremely long hours won't make your work better and it won't help the folks reporting to you. Determine what's still on your to-do list, schedule meetings, finish all important tasks, and then stop. Go to bed early and start the next day refreshed. Your team will thank you.

2 年Thanks for sharing, hope all is well! When having a bad day, I usually try to take a few deep breaths, go for a walk outside (away from people), log off early and rethink/solve stuff the day after. And shouting in the office is NOT ok - if people shout, I simply leave the room/call and suggest to discuss again when they are ready ??
