3 Quick Ideas About Doing You vs. Doing Things to Impress Others

3 Quick Ideas About Doing You vs. Doing Things to Impress Others

I.

An easy way to have a midlife crisis is to work from the outside in.

  1. External Action: I’ll work the job
  2. External Outcome: To get the big house
  3. Internal Outcome: Because that’s supposed to get me a “good” feeling.

Here’s a better way:

Identify how you want to feel—be it peace, fulfillment, or joy—and work backward to determine the decisions and actions that will make that happen.

You’re simply more likely to get what you want if you make the time to clarify what it is and work back from that.

  1. What’s the feeling I want to experience?
  2. What outcome would get me that?
  3. What action do I need to take to achieve that outcome

Achieving clarity on your emotions and how you want to feel about your life is crucial.

It can transform vague aspirations into targeted goals.

Without it, how can you distinguish between what you really want and what you think you’re “supposed to want?”

III.

Would you still pursue a goal if no one else ever knew about it?

If you said yes, then keep going.

If you said no, then you need to rethink why you’re doing it.

This simple question can help you identify if your goals are driven by true desire or external validation.

Question for you:

What’s the one thing you’re currently pursuing, that if you knew no one would ever find out if you succeeded, you wouldn’t see the point in doing it?
