3 Questions You Must Ask Yourself if You Are Scaling a Business in Energy Transition

As the US heads towards another election cycle, there's cautious optimism in the energy transition sector. But the signs are there: many companies we're talking to at the moment are preparing for significant headcount growth in the next 12-24 months.

Scaling a business isn’t just about adding numbers. It’s about creating a structure that ensures long-term success. From my 20+ years in the energy transition sector and first-hand experience in scaling a business in the green energy space, I've learnt a lot of lessons along the way - 3 of which I want to share with you in this article.

Are the right people at the top?

- High-growth companies often rely on a COO type to balance out the CEO’s entrepreneurial drive. If your C-suite lacks the skill set to handle rapid scaling, you’re asking for trouble. Board-level accountability is crucial, especially when you’re in high-growth mode.

Do you have internal processes in place?

- It’s not just about getting a contract out; it’s about maintaining contact during notice periods, ensuring a smooth first day, and setting a 90-day plan. If you don’t have these things mapped out, you’ll struggle to retain the talent you worked so hard to hire and stunt your ability to meet your growth goals.

Have you got the right person, in the right seat?

- The team that got you to this point might not be the team that gets you to the next level. It’s a tough reality, but often your management team needs to either level up or make way for new talent. The chaos-loving hires from your first growth phase may not appreciate the structure and standards required in your second.

Growing pains are inevitable when scaling a business, but it's how? you manage them that will define your success.

If you're considering growing your company, I'd love to chat. I am always happy to chat about the sector and share my own insights for those who are interested, just send me a message on LinkedIn and let's discuss.
