I invite you to read a short part of the series "3 Questions to the Expert" - 3 answers that explain complex phenomena in a simple way, where Magda explains idea of a Smart Homes in an easy going way.
Ania Modrzewska: Recently, there's been a lot of talk about smart homes and IoT devices. What are your thoughts? In general: what is all about smart homes?
Magda Zabrocka: Absolutely, the future is already here. The functionality of a smart home is designed to enhance our convenience. With these systems, we can control everything from our fridge and coffee machine to lighting, heating, and security cameras—all from a smartphone. For instance, our alarm systems can notify us of any suspicious activities around our homes while we’re away. The key difference between traditional systems and smart homes lies in the level of integration and automation. Smart homes also incorporate AI for monitoring user behavior and optimizing various aspects, like energy consumption. This results in an environment that can anticipate our needs and adjust accordingly, making our lives more comfortable and efficient.
Ania Modrzewska: Is it safe?
Magda Zabrocka: While it’s certainly convenient, there are significant security concerns. The data transmitted between the small computers inside these smart devices can be intercepted by unauthorized individuals, which poses a risk. These devices collect a vast amount of personal data—your smart fridge, for example, knows your food preferences, shopping habits, and more. This information could be used for marketing purposes or, in more concerning cases, to violate your privacy or compromise financial data.
More alarmingly, if these devices are hacked, the consequences could be severe. A hacker could disrupt the functionality of your home—raising the temperature on your fridge, turning lights on and off while you're away, or even making unauthorized purchases. Once someone gains access to one device, they can often infiltrate others due to the interconnected nature of smart homes. This could even lead to scenarios where a hacker knows your daily routine and exploits times when no one is home.
One common attack method is the “Man-in-the-Middle” approach, where a hacker intercepts and manipulates communication between your devices, potentially disabling your alarm system or unlocking doors and windows. Unfortunately, most IoT devices are not as secure as they should be, leaving users vulnerable.

?Ania Modrzewska: How can we protect ourselves?
Magda Zabrocka: The first step is ensuring that any device you purchase comes from a reputable source and has a clear origin. You should also disable any unnecessary functions on the device and change the default password immediately. Use a complex password—a mix of upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Whenever possible, enable multi-factor authentication for an extra layer of security.
Like any computer, IoT devices need to be regularly updated, as manufacturers frequently release patches to fix known vulnerabilities. However, it's not just about securing the device itself—the router, which is the hub of all communication between your devices, also needs strong protection. Use a strong, encrypted password (preferably with WPA3 encryption), and consider setting up a separate network just for your IoT devices.
An antivirus program with IoT-specific features is a good additional safeguard, but the most important thing is to stay vigilant. Use common sense and be aware of the risks. Proactive steps like these can help minimize your exposure to potential threats.
