3 Practical Steps to Reach Realistic Goals in Your Life

Everyone dreams, but not everyone takes the necessary action steps to reach their goals. However, it's never too late to start moving towards your dream. In this post, I'll provide practical steps you can take to reach realistic goals in your life.

1. Set Clear Achievable Goals

Setting clear, achievable goals is the first step. Start by identifying what you want to achieve and then break it down into smaller, more manageable steps. This will make your journey seem less daunting and more achievable. Although, I'm still setting new goals for my life, both business and personal, I've recently achieved one of my biggest goals - to build a new home in the country. It's been a three year journey with many challenges and a lack of capital resources and the joy of reaching it is indescribable. Let’s dive into some practical steps you can take to reach your goals:

Assess Your Commitment

  • Before setting any goal, evaluate your commitment level. Ask yourself if you’re really dedicated to putting in the necessary time and effort. Commitment, especially through the tough times, is crucial for achieving goals.
  • If a goal is only somewhat important to you, it might not be realistic. Consider revising or creating a new goal that aligns better with your commitment level.
  • Rank your goals based on importance and tackle the ones you're most committed to first.

Consider Personal Limitations

  • Recognize your limitations, whether they’re physical, financial, or otherwise. Some limitations can be overcome, while others may pose significant challenges. Be realistic, but balance realism with a sense of possibility and look for ways to rise above limitations.
  • For example, if you aspire to become a professional cellist but have hand mobility issues due to a past accident, consider the impact on achieving that goal. You might need intensive physical therapy and adapt your approach. Or if cash is the problem, are there ways to create another stream of income?

2. Create an action plan

Outline what needs to be done, by when, and how (as far as possible). This plan will serve as your road map, guiding you from where you are now (point A) to where you want to be (point B). Be flexible with it.

Organise Your Goals

  • Categorise your goals into long-term, mid-term, and short-term.
  • Long-term goals provide direction, while short-term goals keep you motivated and focused.
  • Prioritise your goals based on urgency and importance

Write Them Down

  • Putting your goals in writing makes them more tangible and reinforces your commitment. I use my journaling times for this.
  • Use a journal, digital note, or goal-tracking app to document your goals and progress.

Do Your Research

  • Gather information related to your goals. Understand what it takes to achieve them. Had we done a little more thorough research in building our home we may have saved ourselves both time and money.
  • Learn from others who have succeeded in similar areas. Talk to those who have gone before you and ask loads of questions.
  • Research can guide your action plan and help you make informed decisions.

3. Take consistent action

Even the smallest step in the right direction can bring you closer to your goals. Change is a process, not a one-time event. Stay patient, stay committed, and keep moving towards your dream.

Be Willing to Make Lifestyle Changes

  • Achieving goals often requires adjustments to your daily habits and routines.
  • Be open to change and adapt as needed.
  • Remember that consistent effort over time leads to progress.

The journey toward your dreams involves persistence, resilience, and a willingness to learn and adapt. Celebrate small victories along the way and stay committed!
