3 Powerful Secrets to Figure Out What You Want from Your Corporate Leadership Career

3 Powerful Secrets to Figure Out What You Want from Your Corporate Leadership Career

Feeling stuck or confused about your career path can be frustrating. You have worked hard to get where you are today and fought the in-built sexism.

You want to be respected, and seen to move things forward by solving problems. You want to be that sphere of influence and be recognized for your hard work, contribution and leadership.

But this doesn't always happen how and when you want it to.

Promotions often go to other internal candidates without you even realising there was an opportunity which can cause you to second-guess yourself and doubt your abilities. You want to be better at selling yourself and increasing your visibility but may not know where to start.

Sound familiar?

If general work frustrations and lack of clarity on what to do next are keeping you up at night, follow these 4 tips.

1. Get crystal clear on your values and what is important to you.?

Most people will say family is #1, yet family is usually the thing that suffers when work comes calling.?

Why is this??

It comes down to your core values. Your core values underpin every single decision you make. Understanding your core values and their priority is one of the first things I do with my VIP 1:1 clients in my program Powerhouse Revolution Program.?

The top values of high-achieving women tend to include family, love, career, and professionalism.?

What are yours?

When you are faced with a decision to make like do I take that late call or read the kids a bedtime story, that’s where the push and pull comes from.?

You are battling between your family values and your value of professionalism.?

But you have got to choose.?

Understanding your values is key to understanding yourself.

Complete this short exercise

  1. Write down the top 3-5 things that are important to you.
  2. Think about when you feel most happy and aligned with who you are.
  3. What are you doing? What makes you feel most in flow?

My top values include family, excellence, empathy, and professionalism and these are reflected in both my personal life and my coaching business.

Remember your top values so you can make better decisions for your long-term happiness and relationships.

Decide now what will you do the next time your boss throws a spanner in the works when you’re supposed to finish early to collect the kids.

What is most important?

There is no right or wrong. You get to choose what feels right for you.

2. Define what success and happiness mean to you

I’ve had clients who think they want a promotion, but when we dig deep and get clear on their values and how the promotion will impact other areas of their lives, sometimes, it transpires that the promotion won't help them find that inner smile.

It's something else in their life that's out of balance.

For others, they are champing at the bit for that promotion, based on the season of life they are in.

I’m all for whatever makes you and the people around you happy.?

But, what I know for sure is ff you are not happy and secure in yourself and who you are and what you bring to the world, there’s not a promotion or salary increase that will ever bring that.??

So how can you figure this out?

Complete?this short exercise

  1. Take a pen and paper and define what success and happiness look like for you.
  2. If you could wave a magic wand, how would would be different?
  3. Write out your ideal day, what you're doing, who you are with and how you feel.
  4. What needs to happen to make this a reality?

3. Connect with your childhood self.

  1. Grab a childhood photo of yourself.
  2. Look into that little girl's eyes, without judgement or shame and reconnect with her. She is still you.?

The person you are today is a combination of who you really are and who you have to become to survive.

Through your life experiences both good and bad, you learned survival mechanisms. That may mean biting before you are bitten or staying quiet and not speaking up in a meeting with senior stakeholders because you are afraid, you’ll say something stupid.?

These habits and behaviors are deeply rooted and were created to keep you safe.?

But before you built these survival mechanisms, you were just you.?

Take a look at that photo, deep into her eyes, without judgment and reconnect.?

She is who you really are.?

You was born into this world for a reason. It's up to you to remember what that reason is.?

What did she want??

What did she enjoy??

What was she good at??

What does she need to know to make her feel safe?

These are all clues to your future happiness.

Lucy Gernon spending time figuring out your values is really important, it is something we often don't take time doing. I remember before I got into the coaching world, not every considering my values never mind being aware of what they were back then.
