3 Media Pitch Ideas for Giving Tuesday

If you work in a nonprofit organization, you're probably already planning for #GivingTuesday on November 28. After a weekend typically filled with giving thanks, indulging in comfort foods and shopping for bargains, Giving Tuesday is a day that "encourages people to do good." This movement, which began 2012, has continued to grow and inspire hundreds of millions of people to celebrate generosity. With a strategic public relations plan, your organization can use Giving Tuesday as a time to spread awareness and increase support for your nonprofit.

Here are three examples of organizations who secured media coverage for their organizations in 2022 - take a look at what they did and use their success to inform your organization's publicity strategy for Giving Tuesday this year.

Metro United Way and Central Louisville Community Ministries were featured in a story about Louisville nonprofits who shared the increased need for donations due to individuals not being able to give as much as they had in previous years.

  • Who was interviewed: Chief Development Officer (Metro United Way) and Executive Director (Central Louisville Community Ministries)
  • Newsworthy topics: Higher costs of living contributed to donations not being able to keep up with demand; organizations ran out of grant money before the year ends; school-aged children were seriously impacted; ways to give back
  • What was shown: B-roll of food & supply drives, giving campaigns on organization websites

Mason-Dixon Community Services hosted 24 hours of giving online and in person on Giving Tuesday.

  • Who was interviewed: Giving Tuesday co-founder
  • Newsworthy topics: Harford Mutual Insurance Group and an anonymous agreed to match the first $7,000 in donation
  • Call to action: Donate in-person or online

Eleven nonprofit organizations were featured in WTOP radio's story on how DC-area residents could support Giving Tuesday last year.

  • Who was interviewed: This journalist used a "listicle" format and highlighted several different organizations instead of an interview.
  • Newsworthy topics: Included local organizations that would likely be of interest to readers in the DC area.
  • Value: The article included direct links to all of the organization's donation pages so readers could easily take action and give.

Does your nonprofit have a public relations plan ready for Giving Tuesday? If not, reach out for support to get you started.
