3?paths and?3 practices to become a CXO

?As a leader do you wonder how you can get to a CXO level quickly. Many of us may be familiar ?with the approach of joining a company and then growing with the same company throughout their careers, patiently rising through the ranks to become a CXO (Tenured executives). The most common path, ?tenured executives immersed in company culture and gain followers while also adapting to changes. Given the pace of change , disruption and the emergence of start ups there may be many options for leaders today other than the tenured path.?

Besides the tenured executive path there are 3 other paths that are popular

1.?Free agents?come up through the ranks at one company, and then leave for another. Free agents are valued because they bring a fresh perspective and new ideas, and are often brought on during times of change or a strategic shift. ?

2.?Leapfrogs?skip two or more levels of management to move into a top-level job, often thanks to their vision and ability to navigate a rapidly changing business environment. This is the most difficult path to execute. One such case was at CISCO when Chuck Robbins leap frogged a level to replace the famous erstwhile ceo John Chambers who served for 2 decades.?

3.?Founders?leave an established company to start their own. This more ambiguous path has a higher level of risk, but can also be an expedited entry to the top, allowing?leaders to create their own opportunities.

Why one of these paths appeals to you? Are you going to take the tenured executive path or one of the above?

Build a Network and Board of Advisors

Professional personality traits need to be considered when looking to rise to the C-suite, but there are also external steps to take. They include:

1.Build a board of advisors.?Look for a mentor — someone who’s held a similar position to one you’re looking to reach — that you can go to for advice. Find a sponsor who can advocate for you and help you get the right level of attention when your company is looking to fill a position.

“Your boss is a big player in all of this as well,” “Your boss can certainly be helpful in getting you your promotion or making sure you're seeing the different ways of advancing in a company.”

2.Cast a wide recruiting network.?Network with your friends, and reach out to people who are in the roles that you want to be in. Ask people who are one or two levels below the C-suite who they admire in their space; then ask them for recruitment connections.

Remember that executive recruitment is a relationship-based business. Taking a phone call from a recruiter doesn’t mean you’re abandoning your company; it means you’re building your network. “It's a networking business,” “A lot of times, if it's an executive recruiter working on a C-suite position, that's your key to getting to the table.”

3.Keep your LinkedIn current and learn to leverage the medium.?“When people have to send over a resume, it can be a daunting task if they are five jobs behind,” Make sure your professional background is fully visible on the platform. Update your profile as you take on new roles and opportunities, such as board seats or research projects. Optimising your linked in profile with a professional picture, key words and building relevant first level contacts in potential companies and recruiters helps in getting discovered easily.
