What are you reading?
I am a voracious reader; from fantasy and historical fiction to books about business and neuroscience, I love to read.
Anytime I come across a book I believe can help the women of Noteworthy grow, lead more effectively, and step into their power, I am compelled to share it. This first quarter I read three such books and I wanted to share them not only with Noteworthy's growing community but with you too. I'd love it if in exchange for these recommendations you provided me with the name of one book you think I should absolutely read too.
And now without further ado if you...
WANT TO SHOW UP MORE POWERFULLY
I first came across Vanessa Van Edwards at this year's San Diego Women's Week Leadership Conference. It's no wonder that Vanessa's talk is one of the ones that stands out most in my mind. In addition to speaking on a fascinating topic - the psychology of cues and how to grow your presence and influence in small but essential ways - she was using many of the cues she discusses in her book.
As a psychologist and an expert in human behavior and reaction, I know this much to be true. You and I use a lot of information to make decisions about the people in our world. Some of that information is factual and concrete - what they know, how their actions match up to their words, their professional and historical background- much more is based on small, subtle, and, to us, unconscious cues.?Cues like the way you position your body in a conversation, the tone of your voice, or even the lines on your face when you smile can propel you forward or bring you crashing down.
In the work we do with established and emerging women leaders at Noteworthy, we're often asked to help women?articulate their value and power ?so they can finally be seen and recognized for their impact. We've been teaching a number of the cues Vanessa shares as part of our Invisible to Unforgettable Program. We'll be adding several more based on this book and the science behind it.
WANT TO WORK MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH WOMEN
"Rania is a global DEI expert who focuses on the practical actions that leaders take to accelerate their success," and this is book is a must-read for men out there who want to understand how to work with and elevate the women on their teams.
The science is clear women are good business.?There's a lot of emphasis on helping women navigate a workplace that was neither created by nor designed for them -?part of the work we do at Noteworthy is to help women in STEM and finance access the leadership opportunities they deserve?and will thrive in. It's important work as long as the system remains what it is.
Anderson's book, We,?focuses on men's contribution to women's success. It's?chock-full of practical tools, strategies, and data on how best to support women at work so they can thrive. When the women on your teams are positioned for success and leadership, companies reap the benefits (increased profitability, greater stability in times of crisis, higher stock momentum and returns...).
Organizations that want to succeed in the 21st century will need to learn how to advance women without molding them to men's ways, and that's where the advice in this book and the programs Noteworthy is unfolding for its corporate partners come in. It's also why I am both a founding member and the co-chair of Athena's Male Allyship committee because everyone needs to adapt if we're going to change this broken system.

WANT TO HOLD ON TO YOUR BEST & BRIGHTEST
READ?DRIVE?by Daniel Pink
A company's success is not its own. It comes from the work and dedication of its employees. Leaders, managers, and founders who fail to understand this will pay dearly in innovation, revenue, and hiring costs.?Being a good people leader isn't cool, it's not an influencer move, and it's not trendy.?Leading with heart, respect, and consideration is necessary to survive in business today.
This is exactly why I love Daniel Pink in general, and his book?Drive?(published in 2009!!!). Too many companies and teams are still operating off of what Pink calls the motivation 2.0 model, the one that was devised in the industrial era to get factory workers to stay on the line. The problem with this model is that it doesn't work anymore, carrots and sticks, benefits packages, and time stamps, these things aren't what motivates your best and brightest to walk into work and do an excellent job day in and day out.
What does? Deriving a sense of purpose from what you do, having some agency in how you work, learning and growing.?How can you make sure the people on your team are getting these motivation needs met??Talk to them, get to know them,?hire us at Noteworthy to teach you the Unforgettable method?- already used on several teams as a baseline hiring and onboarding process to increase engagement and retention of the right people for your company.
I'd love it if in exchange for these recommendations you provided me with the name of one book you think I should absolutely read too.
What's Next...
I'm currently ready Guy Raz's book How I Built This, which is inspiring me to consider new ways of approaching Noteworthy's growth and evolution, as well as a work of historical fiction on the logging industry in Washington. I'll let you know if either makes the Noteworthy list.
In the meantime, many of the methods and strategies discussed in these three books are baked into our 'Invisible to Unforgettable' program.
We're launching our?Spring Cohort FRIDAY MAY 20th?and?enrolling new Noteworthy women today. Click this link to get all the details about the program today and message me personally if you'd like to find out how we can deliver this program to the women in your company.

About Dr. Alessandra Wall & Noteworthy
I have a big problem to solve. Every day thousands of incredibly smart, driven, hardworking accomplished women are feeling unseen, undervalued, and underpaid. They're falling out of love with their work and contemplating leaving their jobs when there's so much left for them to achieve.
At Noteworthy we're committed to helping women in leadership show up more powerfully and own their value so they can be successful and change the world.
Personally, I want to see so many women in positions of leadership that it's no longer noteworthy.
To achieve this vision we work directly with?women leaders in STEM and finance?to help them articulate, plan, and build careers that are wildly successful and deeply satisfying. We also realize that some serious change is needed at the systems level, so?we collaborate with companies and forward-thinking leaders who genuinely care to retain, support, elevate, and attract amazing professional women in STEM and finance.
