3 Mistakes You've Probably Already Made When Choosing Your Writing Niche

(Plus something I've never revealed publicly before...)

Deciding your niche might be one of IMPORTANT decisions you make in your business.

Who you decide to go after is going to make or break your copy business.

Here are 3 mistakes I see so many people make when it comes to choosing their niche.

First!

I love getting on the phone with people for 30 min coaching calls.

I love them because unlike traditional "sales calls" -

these allow me to go deep with the person without any feeling like I'm coaching...

just to get something out of them.

Since there are no strings attached, it puts me at ease and puts my student at ease as well.

One of the things I discuss on these calls is the importance of picking the right niche.

Mistake #1: Picking a low paying niche.

I've learned this the hard way at scale when there is money on the line...

my own hard-earned cash I'm spending to advertise.

Too many times, I see aspiring copy consultants going after niches

who are basically dead broke and

don't have a lot of money to go around.

?How to fix it: Decide on a high paying niche (I shoot for a niche who sells their product/program/service for at least $2K+)

Mistake #2: Not specific enough (riches are in the niches)

When I decided to pick a niche, I was going wayyyy too broad and I was doing too many things for too many people.

At that point, I was pretty desperate to work with just about anyone who would pay me.

Yikes! Not a good spot to be in.

Yet, I didn't know THAT was the problem.

Little later on, I was talking to a guy at a conference who said,

Him: "Adam, I don't know what you do."

What was he talking about?

I said,

Me: "I do everything, I write copy for ads, landing pages, presentations, emails, bot sequences, websites, you name it, we can do it."

Him: "You don't get it. That IS the problem."

Him:"If I have a problem, I don't know if you're the kind of person who can help me."

That's when the light bulb went off.

I need to niche down.

?How to fix it: Pick ONE problem I would solve for ONE specific audience using ONE specific deliverable

Mistake #3: Make it clear what you do (If you don't get this right, you can forget about fixing the other mistakes)

Going along with mistake #2, I have seen a lot of your personal profile's

and I can say the same thing.

If I have a problem, I don't know if you can help me or not...

People are searching, lurking and checking out people's stuff all the time.

I've never shared this publicly, I know this because my personal profile literally gets hundreds and hundreds of clicks every single month (I can track this stuff)

Your profile is like your new website.

People will check out your facebook/linkedin before reaching out.

It's so, so important that you get this nailed down.

Or else, you'll be missing out on a lot of new business that could have been yours.

?How to fix it: Optimize your profile so it reflects what you do and who you can help

That's it!

Those are the 3 mistakes that most aspiring copy consultants make.

Hope it helps you get a little more clear about who is going to be purchasing your copy consulting services from now on.

I found it enlightening to look where the money is, and then see how I can marry that with topics I like to write about. Nice humor in your post, Adam, thanks for posting!

I'm hoping my niche, personal development and educational products, is rich enough and narrow enough to work. I've just set up my web site a little over a week ago.

Adam just solved my problem--narrow my niche

Thanks for the reminder Adam, I was a little undecided on choosing a specific problem to solve.
