3 Message Templates To Help You 10X Your LinkedIn Experience

We've all experienced it. We open up LinkedIn and see a little notification in the upper right hand corner that we have received a message (DM), expecting it to be a lead or our next big opportunity. Instead, it's someone pitching an impersonal, dry message from someone we've never met. Obviously, it gets deleted.

For this reason, most people on LinkedIn rarely send messages at all. Cold pitches in the DMs have gotten a rather bad rap all together. But, sending messages is so important to generating opportunities, creating community, meeting new people, and just enjoying the platform. It takes relationships to the next level, beyond exchanging comments.

Below, I've added 3 DM templates for you to use on LinkedIn. Keep the following in mind though when sending messages:

  1. THESE ARE TEMPLATES - do not copy and paste as is.
  2. Personalize your messages and add some personality.
  3. Show interest in the person you're messaging. Say something specific that would help them realize you took the time to learn more about them.
  4. Keep it short and sweet.

Connection request with a personal note:

"Hi [Name], I hope this message finds you well. I noticed that we have a few shared connections and I wanted to reach out to see if there's an opportunity to connect. I'm always interested in expanding my network and learning more about [industry/field of interest]. Would you be open to connecting?"

Why I like it:

  • It's short and sweet
  • It mentions that you have shared connections so you aren't just a random creep.
  • It's an invitation. No fluff.

Cold outreach to a potential client:

"Hi [Name], I came across your profile and was impressed by your experience in [field/industry]. I wanted to reach out and see if you might be interested in learning more about [product/service]. Our [product/service] has helped many businesses like yours to [achieve specific goals]. I would love the opportunity to discuss further and see if it might be a good fit for your needs. Thanks!"

Why I like it:

  • It's not pushy.
  • It's short and sweet.
  • It's states your intentions, so it's very easy to say yes or no to. I'd rather be open and honest, than talk to someone for 10 minutes only to find out they aren't interested at all.

Request for an informational interview:

Now, I know this one will be controversial, because you don't want to waste anyone's time. However, you also want to be able to hop on calls with people that you meet that can help you make career decisions. If I were trying to get a call, I would prep the runway and warm up the person before asking to hop on a call.

"Hi [Name], I see that you have a lot of experience in [field/industry]. I'm currently exploring career opportunities in [field/industry] and would love the chance to hop on a call and learn more about your experience. Would you be open to a brief call sometime this week? I would really appreciate your insights and advice."

Why I like it:

  • The emphasis is on building the relationship.
  • It's clear and honest.
  • It shows appreciation.

Wrapping Things Up

Writing effective LinkedIn messages requires careful consideration of your:

  • audience

I received this in my email today and was excited to read it! As someone who’s working on building my network and working on my personal growth I have sent some messages that could have been more impactful with these templates.

Doug Kennedy these are useful templates, thanks for sharing. And them more you can do to demonstrate authenticity, the better. I delete all messages that fit into "they hired a service to hit a target" but any message that shows they are a real human with some thought I'll respond.
