Have you ever found yourself staring at a blank screen, wondering how you're going to complete that important task you've been putting off?
Or kicking yourself as you work late into the night for not completing a project sooner?
Whether it's at work, a household chore, or a personal goal, the urge to procrastinate is real and actually pretty normal.
In this article, we'll explore why we procrastinate and what to do about it (even when you don't feel like doing anything).
Why you procrastinate and what to do about it:
Reason 1:?You believe that the thing you want to do is critically important and requires time and focus. Thus, you are waiting to find the perfect time to do this thing. The problem is the perfect time is never going to come and so you never start.
What to do about it:?Accept that there will never be a perfect time and that any progress is a good thing. Just get started. 5-mins can and will compound (it's magical how motivated we can become once we just get started). Try early mornings or right before bed.
Reason 2:?You avoid the thing you believe you should do because it seems like a waste of time in comparison to all the other things you could be doing. It's a bit illogical. You're wasting time to avoid wasting time but our minds try to avoid negative feelings.
What to do about it:?Focus on the present moment. The best way to make the most of your time, or feel that you are,?is to immerse yourself in the activity you are trying to avoid. Pro tip, turn off your phone and unplug your TV (these are some of?the easy dopamine hits we use to avoid the present).

Reason 3:?You're afraid of the task. For whatever reason, self-doubt, fear of failure/success. doing the thing you want to do seems scarier and riskier than not doing it.
What to do about it:?You are afraid of an outcome because you have made up a story about what it might mean, and how unique or unnatural it is to you. Take some time to normalize whatever it is you want to accomplish, research or talk to?people that have done it (people that you can relate to), and break down the task into miniscule steps. The goal here is to make what you feel is impossible seem natural.
