3 Lessons Learned From #LaunchAmerica + Specific actions you can take today

INTRODUCTION
Historical moment, weekend, month, year and far more. In a year, which will go in history as one of the worst years (economicaly, health, catastrophies, census, and much more) for humans, #LaunchAmerica will be remembered as a silverlining and a vastly POSITIVE event that impacted and reenergized people around the world - regardless of age, location, race, religion or gender. If you have not had a chance to watch ti live, I would strongly suggest you look it and watch the recordings. Go NASA. Go SpaceX. With that said, here are lessons learned that I was reminded of and can apply to my #professionaldevelopment starting immediatelly.
Specific action to take today: Watch the #LaunchAmerica and draw lessons from it that you can apply to your own professional development.
LESSON LEARNED #1: Ready vs. Prepared
As I watching the interviews with number of the NASA and SpaceX represenatives, engineers, project managers and support crew, I was reminded about the difference between being ready and being prepared. In fact, one of the NASA administrators explicitly stated "Nothing is hard when you prepare for it." We all can be ready. And we can think we are ready, but unless we are prepared to succeed, we would fail - we would fail to reach our full potential and achieve our career objectives. For that reason, it is imperative to do everything you can to help yourself be prepared. Btw, I heard a statement, which I tend to believe, that states, "Luck is what happens when preparness meets the opportunity," which means you have a chance to influence at least 50% of your luck!
Specific action to take today: Read the book, "It Starts and Ends with EIDP" to learn more about ways and means to be prepared (and not just ready).
LESSON LEARNED #2: Create a plan. Execute the plan.
You have heard the phrase, "plan you work; work your plan." Having a plan, give you direction and alignment, but also ti gives you something to fall back to in case things do not go according to the plan. In fact, having a plan in place, increases your resilience while at the same time provide you with motivation - when you need it the most. When it comes to the #LaunchAmerica, they sure had a plan and they worked the plan, yet the original plan ended up being scrubed (failed to be executed due to unpredictable factor - weather), yet the enthusiasm and motivation of all of those involved remained the same. Btw, even that their original plan "failed" they return to it few days later and execute it ahead of schedule and higher confidence.
Specific action to take today: Create your professional development plan. No one else should. And unless you have a better process, I suggest to create your EXECUTABLE professional development plan using this workbook.
LESSON LEARNED #3: Build and lean on your support (your PBD)
No matter how much NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley trained and learned, in order for them to succeed with their mission - to reach the full potential and mission objectives, they still need support crew. And that is true for us, whose mission is to reach our full potential and achieve our career objectives, we also need support crew - in terms of our network, our coaches and mentors, as well as professionals whose job it to help people that are executing their EXECUTABLE professional development plan. For that reason, it is important for me and you to build a support network that consists of our peers, coaches, mentors, managers, and family members (aka PBD = Personal Board of Directors), and help them help us achieve our mission - reach our full potential and achieve our career objectives.
Specific action to take today: As you think of people that should be part of your PBD, make sure you give them a book, "Leaders Develop First" so that they can be best prepared to support you in creating and executing your EXECUTABLE professional development plan.
BRING IT ALL TOGETHER
Think about it: To reach your full potentail and achieve your career objective, you must create your EXECUTABLE professional development plan - no one else should! You must have resilience and acceptance that things may not go by the plan, but the plan still can be executed and your goals achieved. And never, ever, forget that you do not need to do it alone - reach out to your network and reach out to professionals that can help you.
I am interested to hear from you: What lessons have you been reminded of or learned through #LaunchAmerica historical mission? How important is professional development plan to you? What would help you with your professional development? Please comment below or share in the post. Thank You!
