If there were 3 laws to govern #EdgeAI, you know, like Asimov's 3 rules of robotics, what could they be?
We were (somewhat) joking about this while recording an IoT Coffee Talk episode today, and I wondered, why not just asking Copilot to put them together. I used the following prompt and used the new Think Deeper feature:
If we were to create 3 laws to secure and regulate the development of Edge AI to ensure Edge AI is developed in a way that serves humans, that can't hurt humans, and that's contributing to preserving the environment, what would these 3 laws be?
Copilot ?? came up with the below answer. I will not comment on it myself and let you share your thoughts in the comments. Fire away!
"Crafting foundational laws to govern Edge AI is essential to ensure these technologies enhance human life, avoid causing harm, and contribute positively to our environment. Here are three pivotal laws that could guide the development and deployment of Edge AI:
1. The Law of Beneficial Purpose ??
Edge AI systems must be designed and utilized to serve and enhance human well-being, promoting social good and respecting human rights.
Explanation: This law ensures that all Edge AI applications are created with the primary goal of benefiting people. Whether it's through improving healthcare delivery, optimizing energy use in homes, or enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities, the AI must have a clear, positive purpose.
Example: An Edge AI device in a smart home should prioritize user comfort and energy efficiency, adapting to the homeowner's preferences while reducing unnecessary power consumption.
2. The Law of Harm Prevention and Safety ??
Edge AI systems must be developed to prevent harm to humans, incorporating robust safety measures to protect users physically, emotionally, and with regard to their data privacy.
Explanation: This law mandates that AI should not inflict injury or damage through action or inaction. It emphasizes the importance of security protocols to prevent accidents, data breaches, or misuse of information.
Example: A wearable health monitor powered by Edge AI must securely handle personal health data, ensuring it cannot be accessed unlawfully or manipulated in a way that could harm the user.
3. The Law of Environmental Stewardship ??
Edge AI systems must be implemented in ways that minimize environmental impact, promoting sustainability and reducing carbon footprints throughout their lifecycle.
Explanation: This law highlights the responsibility of AI technologies to be eco-friendly. It encourages the use of energy-efficient hardware, sustainable materials, and algorithms optimized for low power consumption.
Example: An industrial Edge AI system should optimize manufacturing processes to reduce waste and energy use, contributing to more sustainable production methods.
These laws act as guiding principles to align the rapid advancement of Edge AI with ethical standards and environmental considerations. Implementing them requires collaborative efforts among developers, policymakers, and stakeholders.
Additional Considerations:
Transparency and Accountability: Developers should make AI operations understandable to users, providing clarity on how decisions are made. Mechanisms should be in place to hold creators accountable for their AI systems.
Continuous Monitoring and Improvement: AI systems should be regularly assessed for compliance with these laws, with updates implemented to address any shortcomings or emerging ethical concerns.
Community Engagement: Involving diverse groups in the conversation around Edge AI can lead to more inclusive technologies that consider various perspectives and needs.
Visualizing the Relationship Between the Laws:
+-------------------------------------+
???? Beneficial Purpose?????
????? (Serves Humans)??????
+----------------+------------------+
??
+------------------------------------+
???? Harm Prevention & Safety??
????? (Cannot Hurt Humans)????
+----------------+------------------+
??
+------------------------------------+
??? Environmental Stewardship???
?? (Preserves the Environment)???
+------------------------------------+
This flow illustrates that each law builds upon the previous one, creating a comprehensive framework guiding Edge AI development from human-centric benefits to global environmental responsibility.
By adhering to these laws, we pave the way for Edge AI to become a transformative force that enhances our lives without compromising safety or the health of our planet."

2 周What about the value of free will human created data? Getting the model to understand the value of humans data input in a free will environment. My line of thinking here is that data is what AI depends on to evolve and learn. The importance our data verses any other source of input. Makes us valuable to the AI model moving forward. Just my line of thinking ??

1 个月Olivier Bloch thank you. Not a bad answer in fact two of the answers I have used in my privacy frameworks which are benefit to humans and safety. I think part of safety at the edge should include the risks that come with overcollection of personal data that could cause harm. I feel like too many of these things collect far more personal data than necessary and that should be addressed.
