Have you ever experienced a “work-quake?” A moment of profound shaking that effectively turns your work-world upside down and sets you on a new path?
If so, you’re not alone. In fact, in his latest book, The Search: Finding Meaningful Work in a Post-Career World, my guest on this week’s SPARKED Podcast, New York Times bestselling author, Bruce Feiler , argues that work-quakes have become so common and universal, we are now in a post-career world. Profound shaking and change have become the norm.?
The last few years have left many of us questioning the established ways of doing work. A global pandemic, generational shifts in values, and technological disruption have disrupted business-as-usual. Now, more than ever, finding meaningful work feels less like following a set career path and more like writing your own story.
Question is, how do you navigate these moments?
Bruce offers 3 key insights:
Workquakes are the new normal
Traditional careers are a thing of the past. We now experience frequent work disruptions, called "workquakes", every 2-3 years on average. 55% of workquakes originate from life events outside work, highlighting how work and life are intertwined. We need new tools to navigate this changing world of work.
Find your work story
To find meaningful work, begin by uncovering your "work story", the narrative inside you about what gives you purpose. Bruce suggests doing a "meaning audit" through self-reflection and questions. He says, "The story you're trying to tell is already within you." Identifying your work story helps you chart your own path.
Focus on feelings, not numbers
The conversation around work focuses too much on quantifiable metrics like pay and productivity. Bruce argues we need more attention to the "literature" of work - how we feel about our jobs and how they fit our lives. Questions of fulfillment, joy and work-life balance are much-neglected parts of the work equation.
These insights offer a fresh perspective on work in today's disrupted world. President Director - Creating a Sustainable Humane World in Harmony with Nature
1 年After three decades of working internationally on the global imperative of sustainable development, in 2002 at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development whilst presenting our global assessment report," Climate Change & Agricultural Vulnerability", I came to the realization that there can be Sustainable Development without Humanity adopting sustainable responsible lifestyles in harmony with Nature. ? Three years later in 2005 I established Zen Resort Bali, a holistic wellness & sustainable lifestyles resort in a lush and serene Nature environment in north Bali. ? Following first a work-quake moment in 2009 at an international science for policy institution in Austria where I had worked for 17 Years, I undertook a two-year assignment working as Director of a GCC National Food Security Program. ? In 2012 I moved to Bali to manage Zen Resort Bali with a focus on developing innovations to enhance physical, mental, emotional and spiritual holistic wellbeing, a prerequisite to living sustainably and responsibly. Here I am in 2023 continuing the mission of sustainable lifestyles with a passion & commitment (meaningful & most satisfying) to develop a worldwide network Zen Holistic Wellness Resorts See links below in reply

1 年My moment of recovering my own path and success happened about 6 years ago when I was doing my coach certification. I was working in a company which assisted me to have a brand new look in life many years ago and I was grateful to be assisting in their sales then. Yet something was amiss. I was missing out being involved and present in my 2 young boys lives, as the sales work was almost 24/7. And because I was measured purely by sales target, it was hit or miss. There was no recognition of the intangible feelings of commitment, gratitude and even learning. With the massive encouragement by one of my certification coursemate, I made one of the biggest change in my life. He believed in me more than I believe in myself then. He said “You start your own coaching company, Cass. Cos you are a good coach, and I will support you!” And fast forward I am, feeling contented, challenged and invigorated most of the time. And the best thing is, now I can give others who are seeking, coaching opportunities. Jonathan Fields
