The 3 Keys to Limiting Unhelpful Thoughts

The 3 Keys to Limiting Unhelpful Thoughts

It happens to all of us. We’re working from home, trying to be productive, but our minds wander off, and we end up focusing on unhelpful thoughts.?

These unhelpful thoughts could either be mild distractions or could be very disruptive to our productivity.?

I love the quote by Jerry Bruckner that says, “the biggest mistake you can make in life is to waste your time.” Your time is not a good thing to waste. If you can’t properly manage your unhelpful thoughts, you’re not using your mind to its fullest potential. Imagine how productive you could be if you had strategies to replace your negative thoughts.??

Check out these strategies to manage unhelpful thoughts:

  1. Understand that your brain produces random thoughts.?The unwanted thoughts that you experience say very little about you as a person. It is entirely natural to experience unhelpful thoughts. The first step in not letting random thoughts bother you is recognizing that everyone has frivolous thoughts.?
  2. Learn to focus your attention on productive thoughts.?Just like any habit is formed, you can mold your recurring thoughts into what you want through repetition. It takes time to train your mind to stay focused, but your life will get a lot more productive once you do. As soon as you experience an unwanted thought, shift your focus to one of your goals. Recognize that you have the power to redirect your thinking as you see fit.?
  3. Space between you and your thoughts is essential.?It’s imperative to know that you don’t need to fully engage with your unhelpful thoughts. You don’t need to dwell on every negative, fearful, concerning thought that you have. Most of our thoughts pass through our minds, and if we don’t give them much attention, they won’t become problems for us.

The key is to focus your attention on what you intend to think about and avoid getting involved with random thoughts.?

Remember, we all experience random thoughts and have to fight to stay on task. Even though it’s tough, it’s worth the effort to stay focused. Don’t make the mistake of wasting your time!

Thought distractions are a productivity killer for sure Matt Zaun. Something I encourage people to do to battle thought distraction is to keep a list of tasks nearby that can be completed quickly. When you experience thought distraction, shift focus and complete a small task. This will create a small win, a shift in mindset, and allow you to get back to your original train of thought. Thank you for sharing, Matt!

Matt Zaun, I'm guilty as charged on this post!!?? Seriously, IMO, I think it's human nature that thoughts come at the most unexpected times yet we all get distracted by those thoughts. Those thoughts could be about any matter that may be happening in your life, like working in a stressful environment or working from home in a quiet room where focusing on what needs to be completed can be challenging.

Great article Matt Zaun very helpful
