3 Key Signs People Truly Understand Your Idea

3 Key Signs People Truly Understand Your Idea

After pitching complex technologies to investors and executives across Silicon Valley, I’ve learned how to tell when people really “get it.” Early on, I made the mistake of using industry jargon to make the product sound impressive, but all I got were blank stares and polite nods. It felt like I was the only one talking, with little to no feedback. But as I shifted focus from the product itself to what it actually does and the impact it has, three incredible things started happening:?

1. No More Product/Service Questions?

When people truly understand what you’re offering, they stop asking product-focused questions. Instead of spending 30 minutes explaining what it is, I realized that focusing on how the product benefits them or society allowed me to convey the message clearly. The moment people stop asking for product clarifications, you know they’ve “got it.”?

2. They Give You Ideas for Marketing?

When people intuitively understand your product, they start offering suggestions for marketing or selling it. As I transitioned from product details to explaining its real-world applications, potential investors began brainstorming ways to reach new customers. They’re no longer trying to understand—they’re trying to help you sell it.?

3. They Tell You How They Will Use It?

Perhaps the clearest sign is when people start telling you how they’ll use your product in their own lives. Whether it's ideas for new markets or additional applications, this shows they not only understand it but are already imagining it fitting into their own world. When this happens, you’ve struck gold!?

Key Takeaway?

Next time you pitch, focus on the impact and let the conversation lead to new ideas and applications. That’s when you know your idea is understood.?
