A good logo is crucial to creating an impactful brand that will instantly catch people's eye and stay in their mind long after they first see your brand.?
With so many possibilities, creating a logo can seem a daunting task.?
Creating an effective logo is more straightforward when you focus on the characteristics that make them effective. Let's explore three characteristics of an effective logo.?
Memorable
When people see your logo (even for the first time), you want it to make an impression. Why? Consumers are bombarded with so many marketing messages every day. You want to make an impact, so they remember you. Uniqueness is key to standing out. You want to be sure your logo stands out from others in your industry. Investing in a custom-designed logo ensures your logo is as unique as your company and your uniqueness shines through.?
Your logo also needs to be recognisable, so your customers instantly remember it whenever they see it. A logo that is easy to remember will stick in your customers' minds, making it a more valuable asset to your company.?
Part of making a logo memorable comes down to its simplicity. Even if consumers only glance at your logo once, its simplicity will help keep it in their mind. Using as few elements as possible will help make your logo easier to recall. Not including too many colours and keeping shapes simple rather than complex helps here. You only need to glance at some of the top brands to see this principle working in practice - think of Apple, Uber, and Microsoft.?
Relevant
Your logo should be relevant to the work you do and who you serve. Your logo should evoke the right associations, meanings and feelings that make sense for your business and your brand. This doesn't necessarily mean you need to create a complex icon. You can communicate a lot through a simple icon or even just a wordmark alone. The trick is having a clear concept of what you are trying to communicate. This means focusing exclusively on your brand's core ideas and values to communicate them in the most effective way without unnecessary clutter. The logo doesn't have to communicate every aspect of your business, rather it should act as a visual clue to your purpose or values.?
Your logo should also be relevant to your brand's personality. One important aspect is colour. Different colours can trigger different emotions and communicates your brand's personality to your customers. The fonts and shapes you use also communicate a lot about your brand's personality. If you are a conservative company, don't use a whimsical logo. If you are a creative organisation, don't use something that looks dull or uninspiring.?

You also want to ensure your logo remains relevant over time. Whilst trying to incorporate the latest design trends and fads may look cool now, they can quickly become outdated when trends change. In general, it's therefore best to avoid overstylised designs, the latest design trends, or references to specific time periods (unless they are relevant to your brand).?
Versatile
Logos need to be used in all kinds of situations, applied on different mediums, and fit in specific spaces. A logo that can only be used in one size and one format will hugely limit where it can be used. Choosing a logo that can easily be resized and placed on different media increases the visibility of your brand.?
Even if your logo looks outstanding on a banner, if it becomes illegible when you shrink it down to put on your website, or it becomes distorted when you try to print it on a canvas bag, it's not going to serve you well.?
It's worthwhile exploring where you intend to promote your business and where you might need to use your logo before the creative work begins. That way you can be sure your logo will work for these specific situations. For example, maybe you want to produce packaging for your products, print canvas bags, or create an advert for a newspaper.?
Size, format, and colour can have a big impact when you transfer your logo from one medium to the next, so be sure your logo works in all these situations.?
Having a simple design will help make your logo more versatile. Having too many lines, frills, flourishes, and colours can make your design difficult to scale, transform to black and white, or print on unusual materials.?
In conclusion, creating a logo that is relevant, memorable, and versatile ensures your customers won't just look at your logo and forget it a moment later. They will feel a greater connection with your brand and remember you when they see your logo pop up in a different place.
Whilst crucial, creating a logo is just one part of building your brand. Do you want to learn more about the other aspects of branding and what you can do to strengthen your brand? Take my free quiz, how Impactful is your brand?
