How can you speak the unspeakable and still maintain respect?

Being able to handle difficult conversations and tough talks ranks among the least appealing but most important management + leadership duties.

As a leader you are required to hold people accountable, let them know what’s expected of them, keep them in check and informed of their progress — even when the news isn’t good.

You also need to know how to set boundaries and manage expectations, with your teams and clients, which can be very uncomfortable for a lot of people.

Many of my coaching clients tell me they wish they were better at handling difficult conversations and setting boundaries. They'd rather either avoid it as much as they can, delegate it to someone else or be in denial about it at times.

The reasons for avoiding it can range from 'I hate conflicts?and come on too soft' to 'I don't want to upset anyone' to 'I have a short fuse and can blow up easily'. None of this is helpful, right?

When we avoid difficult conversations we trade short term discomfort for long-term dysfunction.

  1. CONFIDENCE - learn to handle delicate conversations well. Have the confidence to say what needs to be said to the person who needs to hear it. Don't delegate the conversation you need to have to someone else to handle. Speak openly and have a strong belief that your opinion deserves to be heard.
  2. HUMILITY - realise that others have valuable input you and your business can benefit from. You don’t always have to win your way. Your opinion provides a starting point but not the final word. Be willing to both express your opinion and encourage others to do the same.
  3. SKILL - understand that people who are willingly share delicate information are good at doing it. That’s why they are confident in first place, because they found a way to communicate that allows both candour and safety.
