3 Important Traits of a Nonprofit Board Member

3 Important Traits of a Nonprofit Board Member

Nonprofit boards shape the work we do to build communities, change lives and lift each other. Selecting effective board members is vital to that work. Here are three important traits to consider when recruiting board members to your organization:

One: Passion

The fundamental role of the board is to ensure that the mission of the organization flourishes. When board members understand that core mission and can articulate its impact with clarity and passion, they will draw others to the organization. They will inspire their peers and potential supporters. They will add the spark and energy needed for the organization to move forward, even when facing challenges and obstacles.

Two: Problem Solving

Nonprofits have a daunting task to accomplish their missions, usually with limited resources. We can never do all we want to do - we can't provide programs to everyone who needs them, we can't cure all the ills we see around us, we can't pay our staff what they deserve. We intuitively know our limitations, but we don't like to accept that. We become problem solves, doing thing for a penny on the dollar. Find board members who thrive on the challenge of working miracles. Look for those who say "we can find a way", rather than "no use, we've tried that before."

Three: Connection

The ability to connect us with the community and with potential champions is an essential role of every board member. We all do that differently, and there is no right or wrong way to connect. Some board members are outgoing and fearless in talking with others, some board members are thoughtful and strategic about who they bring into the fold, and still others can tell authentic stories that inspire others to become a part of us. All that is needed is the willingness to spread the word. When we open our mouths and show our hearts - magic happens.

A personal shout out . . . to the countless board members who give so much in helping organizations thrive. Keep up the good work.
