You graduated from college, thinking you will land on your feet. You didn’t, right? Well, do not be too surprised because you are not alone. With the present economy, it might take weeks or months before you get a job you studied for.
Nonetheless, if you are one of those people who are following that dream job, then that’s another story. It will need proper planning, enthusiasm, determination, patience, as well as the capability to accept failures and mistakes.
In this chapter, let’s walk through some steps or the top tips that will help you get your dream job.
Identify ALL Channels for Your Dream Jobs
After you have made up your mind as to what you like, the next step is to research. You must determine every channel for your dream job. You must figure out the companies that provide the job you like to get.
Your research must go above the background of the company. You must research the requirements for the relevant positions, the format of resumes, the application process, cover letters, and interview questions, among others.
One of the ways I research the company is to sometimes try their product if it's applicable for use publicly, call their customer support for a chat, and even reach out to any of the employees working at the company for coffee to understand deeper about the company.
This way, it allows me to get a better insight into their culture, what are they passionate about in day-to-day work and how are they being treated within.
It would be wonderful if you will also learn about the people who are working already with the firm. You could go check their professional profiles too. See their educational backgrounds and the things they had to offer to the company. Probably, you could get in touch with them and schedule a meetup. That will bring you to the next tip.
Go Connect & Network
Network, network, network! You never know, but you might end up finding your dream job over a cup of tea or coffee when you are hunting for opportunities. Take note that you are seeking individuals who have the same interests as yours. Think of this as dating.
The relevance of this step must not be underestimated. Remember that opportunities are typically linked to people. You must go out there and network with the right individuals. You must acknowledge who are these right people.
Think you like to work in a hospital, and one of your peers might have an old college friend already working there. He or she could help obtain relevant inside information. These people might even be able to squeeze in an interview.
Refresh Your LinkedIn Profile
LinkedIn users see their profiles as only an electronic feature. However, they fail to understand that they could win the exposure required for their career’s next big break with the right strategy. In fact, a survey performed by LinkedIn discovered that forty percent of Fortune 100 companies hire employees through the platform.
1. Go get that perfect profile headshot
This photo must be a full headshot. Your facial expression must be confident and pleasant too. Stay away from uploading unnecessary images of yourself into your LinkedIn profile.
2. Get noticed with a solid headline
Replace your existing profile headline with something descriptive. Use a relevant statement, showing what you have contributed. Do not ever leave your headline section blank!
3. Don’t forget about the keywords
Utilize keywords like this within your profile. This must include the Summary, Experience, and Skills section too. These keywords make it simpler for potential employers to see your profile.
Always keep in mind that hiring organizations will access your LinkedIn page. Ensure any online profiles you have are accurate, updated, and complete. Explain your skills concisely and clearly. Don’t forget to showcase your achievements too. Ensure you highlight your portfolio as well with your work samples and add it to your profile, whether you are an artist, designer, or writer. We will dive deeper into this in the next chapter.
Check & Recheck Resume for Mistakes
Grammatical mistakes on your resume could suggest your application is more likely to land in the garbage bin than land you the dream job. Thus, you need to ensure your resume is grammatically smooth before submission.
Remember that a resume loaded with grammatical mistakes sends that you were not engrossed in the job or driven enough to spend your time proofreading and editing your resume. The employer might think how the company could trust that you’ll spend the needed time on a project for the business if you cannot be bothered to put in the effort on something, which will benefit you.
Proofread your resume twice or thrice to check for any mistakes. If possible, you can ask a trusted colleague or a friend to proofread it for you. Take note that it’s simple to miss your typos and spelling mistakes, as you understand what the intended wording was.
Practice Interviewing
You need to impress throughout the interview if you want to land your dream job. Simply put, the more prepared you are, the more relaxed you will be. One of the amazing ways to do that is by practicing. The majority of organizations and schools set up mock interview sessions, which you could attend. Maybe you know someone else in your industry, you can request him or her to play the role of the interviewer and receive feedback from him or her.
You will walk in much more confidently even if the questions you get in the real interview are different. It will also help you clarify how your experiences could help you land your dream job. You might not have direct experience performing a certain job. However, there is always something in your background, which you could analogize. The only thing you need to do is to practice articulating this effectively and successfully.

Hey, thanks for reading this post up to this sentence. Now, I know you're probably wondering, "Why do you post this article?"
Well, I first started my career journey as a headhunter and the reason why I jumped into recruitment is that I didn't know what I want back then. I thought the best thing to do is to interview thousands of people, understanding their roles and industries. With this exposure, I was able to understand the mind of the recruiters, hiring managers, and years later had the privilege to be in various roles with top global companies.
I am forever grateful to all the people that came into my life and showed me that I have what it takes to pursue my goals. Today, I am on a mission to help driven & ambitious people to get in front of global leaders & world-changing companies.
