3 Hidden Backup Costs

3 Hidden Backup Costs

When selecting a cloud provider or backup solution there are three things you probably want to avoid:

Solutions that charge by Data volume / Front-End Terabyte (FETb)

This matters in this day and age due to the increasing data volumes we collect about virtually everything. Data growth in a typical business over a year can be anything between 10% and exponential. Some unpleasant cost increases happen on service renewal.

Leaving your cloud provider? - they may charge to egress your data

Unbelievable isn't it? I heard a horror story from a friend last week who has a client they are trying to help out of a sticky mess. The enduser has increasing data, so they have to pay their cloud provider more and more each month and at the same time they cannot afford to egress their data. Catch 22.

They charge for every support ticket you raise

Support is fairly high up the agenda these days for most organisations as we don’t typically have the bandwidth to learn every technology in our IT Estate and have to rely heavily on our suppliers to help us with support issues. Backup regimes can take a fair amount of support to rectify issues with help of the provider – being charged for every ticket you raise is not a good recipe for success.

Alternatives

At Bacula Systems we charge our customers by the size of their IT Estate they wish to backup and the number of different technologies they deploy. We think this is a fairer pricing model as it reflects the amount of support we will have to typically provide.
