3 habits I've adopted from producing a podcast

"It all begins with a dream." So they say. Dreams show you what it COULD be, but never tell you HOW to get there. But knowing your end point is a good start.
For me, it literally came in the form of a dream! I had a podcast that was listened to by a million people! It was all about finding that secret sauce from Entrepreneurs, Professionals and highly motivated individuals who achieved plenty! At the same time, these inspirational guests weren't the likes of Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Gandhi and MLK, but more of the everyday hero - hardworking people who built their businesses and careers up from scratch. The Hotel GM who started as a chambermaid, the Restaurant owner who started as a waiter.
So, I began reaching out to my personal network and many had graciously accepted to be a guest along the way. I had (and still have) no budget, no design team, no audio engineers, no writers. Nada. 16 episodes in and still kicking!
So let's get to the 3 habits that I've adopted from producing a podcast:
- Just get started first - Take Action!
"Bro, what you're doing is really good. Many people talk about ideas, but don't do it. Low budget, never mind! Just do first!" Imis Iskandar came onto the show to share more about his journey setting up Chairity and how he made mistakes along the way. But not knowing isn't an excuse to not get started! You'll learn along the way and adapt from Version 1.0 to 1.1 and so on. However, if you don't even get Ver 1.0 out there, you'll never get to 1.1!
Long story short - even if your plan is only at 50% - get the ball rolling first and keep evolving the plan as you go along!
2. Start by winning - Make your bed every morning
"Nobody is a morning person." says Elika Tasker. She's such a motivated person, it's hard to believe that she feels that way too! At that moment I realized, even Superman probably has days that he doesn't want to go to work! In another podcast, Douglas Danapal also mentions the same thing - mornings are tough, but knowing that you can have that first win by just making your bed helps you to start your day right!
On the mornings that I just don't want to exercise or need to get the cobwebs out of my head, the first thing I do is to make my bed and acknowledge - "I've made something happen already!"
3. Balance your boxes
Andrew Senduk was so kind as to share his insights on time management, but I never knew how much of an impact this had on me until I started adapting it to my lifestyle!
For me to feel that I've had a great day, I honestly MUST have these four boxes filled:
- Time with Loved Ones - that would be family and/or friends
- Spiritual Well-being is really about staying centered. For some, it involved prayer and for others it may simply be meditation or cooking for someone. After a long day at work-from-home, shutting down the laptop and taking care of my garden herbs is just one of the things that calms my mind.
- Self-improvement and Hobbies - this encapsulates a few things: Feeding your body right, Feeding your mind right and constantly learning something new! Eat right, exercise consistently and sleep well. Feeding your mind is really about reading a book, watching a documentary or learning something that's not job-related. (I've been absolutely fascinated with HP Lovecraft's works as of late, so that's me going down the rabbit hole and exploring Cthulu myths and Cosmic Horror.)
- Work-related. I list down the tasks I am to accomplish during the day and how it continues to relate to my personal vision. Remember - no work is worth doing unless there's meaning to it.
