3 Good Reasons To Celebrate At Work

3 Good Reasons To Celebrate At Work

Hey, it's Stacey Ashley here, and it's finally December so I can talk about Christmas. That's one of my rules. You don't talk about Christmas until December because otherwise, the year just doesn't seem to have enough in it.

The great part about Christmas is we get to celebrate. We get to spend time with our family and friends, and for me, it brings the end of the year, and so there seems to be lots of celebrations going on. In fact, for me, I've been involved in I think four different celebrations in the last couple of weeks, and it's just been great.

So, for me, it was the Stevie Awards and getting a couple of Bronze awards, which was just awesome, and I really loved. Then I've been to school presentations, and I've been to dance competitions and presentations. And last week I was lucky enough to spend some time with a fabulous group of colleagues and really be part of their celebration of what they've achieved and the progress that they've made.

It really just made me kind of think about the opportunities for celebration in the workplace, in our organisations, and that we just don't make enough of those. I think there's so much there that we could really capitalise on, and we just don’t do it enough. You can feel my excitement. So, here are the three things that I think celebration really offers, and why it could add so much value in the workplace.

  1. So, the first one is of course recognition. We talk in the workplace about that we need to recognise people more, and we really need to pay attention to their contributions and help people to feel really valued. So, having celebrations allows us to do that, to recognise progress, to recognise contribution, to value people. And when it's appropriate to reward them. It's a real acknowledgment, and we can do that in lots and lots of different ways, depending on what works for the individual. So, that's the first thing.
  2. The second thing I notice, being part of the audience in some of these celebrations was just great. It felt great. Seeing what other people had done, and being part of their enjoyment and their achievements and successes and growth and journey, it just felt really fabulous. Who doesn't want to feel like that? It's very energising.
  3. Then the third thing is that it's super inspiring. Seeing what other people have done, or the incredible effort they've made, or just what they've learned, or the progress that they've made, it really, for me, gives me something to aspire to. Maybe I won't do the same thing, or I may not do it in exactly the same way, but it really gives me some great ideas and again, that energy, and things to really challenge me to step up or do something differently. And wow, what an opportunity that would be in the workplace if we had more people that were having those kinds of thoughts or feelings.

So, I think as we come to the end of the year, and I know that people around me are kind of tired, but I still think there's opportunity to capture those ideas about what celebrations would really give us a way forward, recognising what's happened, but also set us up for what's next. I think in our workplaces there's so much opportunity, there's so much more potential, and celebrating is just one way of tapping into that.

Hey, have a great day.
