3 essential mindset shifts to get your career to the next level
Why is it that you have taken steps, changes, applied for new roles or jobs, started there and are unhappy after a while again? Why are the changes you took not enough and sometimes feel off after a short while already?
What I often see in my coaching practice are clients that have taken fast decisions, based on wanting to leave a situation. Be that a bad manager or a company that was not aligned with what they wanted.
But running away from something is not the right way to create the future. Don’t get me wrong, there are toxic situations you have to leave because otherwise you will burn out or run into depression or worse. But outside of these extreme situations, it is really important to open up your mind, know exactly what you want and only then take conscious steps towards that.?
Shifting your mindset will allow you to make changes to your career that will be grounded in who you really are, leverage your full potential, maybe take more effort now, and will definitely lead to a long term fulfillment of a life that is aligned with who you are and what you want.?Let's explore the 3 major mindset shifts for this:
The term growth mindset has been coined by Carol Dweck in her book “Mindset” and is rooted in Neuroscience and research.?
The definition of a growth mindset could be put as such:?
The opposite is a fixed mindset. That you are stuck with what you know and can do today and that you are limited in what you can achieve.?
Embracing a growth mindset is not a “do it once and you are done” but a daily practice. Whenever you realize your inner self-talk is limiting you - make a conscious effort to embrace all possibilities. This will over time adjust your mental patterns and help you open up to more possibilities in life - and therefore create more opportunities to find fulfillment in your career.?

2. Confidence
Being confident in who you are and what you can do or achieve, is a fundamental basis of thinking big and going after your dreams. It builds a lot on the Growth Mindset and allows you to think about what real success would look like for you. Real success is rooted in you and not the expectation of society, friends, or family. Real success is what would make you excited, happy, and fulfilled in the long run.?
Therefore feeling confident is a prerequisite of making plans that feel good a few months and years down the road. .?
An exercise that can help feel more confident is the workshop format from Google, called “I am remarkable”. You can find more details here: https://iamremarkable.withgoogle.com/

The most important thing to remember here as well is Daily practice. As with embracing a growth mindset, practicing confidence exercises daily is the only way to build confidence over time that feels good and authentic.
3. Long-term perspective
The third mindset shift is about embracing a long-term perspective. It’s not about having everything planned out for the next 30 years but looking at your career from different angles. And one angle can be to look at where you would like to be at the end of your life or career.
And then translate that into where you are today, what you want right now, and build a few next steps that you feel excited to take on right now. And that makes you feel excited looking at your future.?
A tool you can use to do that is a career roadmap. Define a loose goal a few years down the road. And then create steps backward that you need to take in order to get to that goal. And then check in with yourself if that's a meaningful goal and feels good.?
These 3 mindsets build on each other - so don’t skip one. The career roadmap will not feel right or meaningful if it's not rooted in a growth mindset and has been created from a place of confidence.?
