3 Essential Lessons from tackling fears for building credibility
Debbie Jenkins
?Ready to turn your ideas into a business asset? Let’s chat about your book strategy.? I help experts scale with your assets, not your time by writing, publishing & promoting SHORT VALUABLE BOOKS?
This morning, I was bold, and went beyond my usual boundaries and recorded a short segment for Channel 4's "A Place in the Sun", sharing insights on expatriate life in the Murcia region of Spain. This step, although daunting, transformed my expertise into a visible, trusted asset that could reach and influence a broader audience. It also puts me on the radar for other opportunities.
I'm going to share 3 quick lessons from that experience to help you, an expertise-based business owner, understand why embracing seemingly scary opportunities can significantly enhance your professional desirability and trustworthiness.
Stepping forward can expand your influence and make your intellectual property more tangible.
Lesson 1: If You Don't Put Yourself in the Game, You Will Never Win
Entering the game is often the most intimidating step. Many business owners shy away from the spotlight, fearing exposure to criticism or failure.
I admit, I wasn't sure about putting myself forward. I regretted it the minute I sent the message. Why would they choose me? What have I got to share?
However, embracing the fact that you cannot win if you do not play is vital. Only by actively participating can you open doors to new opportunities.
Participating in "A Place in the Sun" was a leap of faith for me. Despite initial fears, this platform can significantly boost my visibility and establish trust with a vast audience. I have a series of books about living in the area (visiting, buying property, cooking, etc), and now I'll have a "credibility clue" from an external source, classifying me as the expert.
The energy of being on camera was initially nerve-wracking, but discussing my expertise built my confidence. Action is the foundation of success.
Lesson 2: It's Not About Your Appearance, It's About Your Expertise
Concerns about physical appearance can detract from seizing opportunities where your expertise could shine. I was initially worried about my appearance - what to wear, messy hair, not black or white, no dots or patterns - in the end I wore what makes me feel comfortable. I got over myself!
I frequently say that I'm not overweight, I'm undertall.
It’s crucial to remember that your professional worth is measured by your knowledge and ability to convey it, not by your physical attributes. People seek your expertise because they trust you have the answers they desire.

This realisation became clear during the shoot. Despite my initial discomfort, (that might have been due to the sound guy shoving the mic pack down my jeans) nobody mentioned my stature they were more interested in what I had to say.
Your expertise is a significant asset—let it take centre stage and speak for itself.
Lesson 3: You'll Never Be "Ready" – You Just Have to Start
The notion of being "ready" is often an obstacle. The ideal moment to act seldom arrives.
I wasn't completely prepared to go on TV, but I recognised that waiting for full readiness might mean missing an opportunity. This spurred me to act, leveraging my intellectual property in impactful ways.
I had the support of my PR team: Carrie Eddins & Anica Broms - who encouraged me to go for it.
Starting before feeling ready helped me fulfil my desire to be recognised as an authority. Each action taken builds not only your skills but also the trust others place in you.
You need to put yourself in the game, focus on expertise over appearance, and get started despite doubts if you want to leverage your intellectual property and build trust with your audience. Whether that's putting yourself forward for TV programs, writing a business growing book, creating that membership - you won't make an impact if you don't take action.
What have you done recently outside of your comfort zone?
My new book is coming out next week: Stop The Credibility Crisis - it's all about why you need to build trust and desire for what you do!
